Keyboard stops working after suspend sometimes

Post by mintypinky »

Good evening.

I own a laptop with Mint 20 Cinnamon installed and, sometimes, the onboard keyboard will have stopped working after waking from suspend.

This doesn't affect either the touchpad or external keyboards, however.

I've tried following the recommendations on this link, about putting i8042.nomux=1 in /etc/default/grub, but to no avail.

With a 9th-gen Intel, I would recommend you try a newer kernel to see if that helps.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.11 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
You might also want to check to see if any newer BIOS/UEFI are available for your computer. Sometimes those help with keyboard-related issues.

Thanks for the answer and sorry for not seeing it earlier.

Weirdly enough, after doing and undoing the changes mentioned in the link in the OP, since they didn't seem to have worked, the problem started manifesting itself, no explanations given.

If it happens again, I will try your solution, although I'm a little scared of bricking my system with a new kernel, since it's been very stable otherwise.

Thanks again and merry Christmas!

Hello there mintypinky, I've noticed you have the exact same machine as I do.

Could you answer some questions about it?

My A60 MUV heats up a lot using any linux distro. Booting into windows keeps the machine in somewhat cool (either in the power adapter or battery).
After installing tlp and powertop, using the machine on battery power i have good temperatures and the battery life, but in the power adapter, the heat of the notebook on the is absurd (both inside and in the palmrest), do you also deal with this problem? (The ambient temperature where I live is about 27°C ± 5°C).

Thanks!

Hello, vlms.

My computer does get hotter on Linux than on Windows under the same load, but I eventually just got used to it. Sorry that I can't help.

I confirmed this still happens sometimes on 20.3 and 21, but forgot to update the post, so I'm removing the [SOLVED].

What do you do when it happens? Do you plug in an external keyboard?

My thought is to get some logs of the issue to see if we can determine what might be happening.

I usually just reboot it from the lock screen. Sometimes I also use the onboard keyboard to login and check on stuff I don't want to lose, so I could do that to get the logs.

How would I get them?

Run the following in a terminal and paste the output in a post here. That gets the last 200 lines in dmesg which would hopefully be far back enough to get the start of suspend and what happens after it. I'm guessing there will be some keyboard references in some of the messages.

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 200

Sorry, but I do not see anything in that output related to a keyboard.

Are you running the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your computer?

What is the output of xinput?

The output for xinput is:

Code: Select all

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]

Those seem to be standard outputs. I thought maybe if there was something different from normal that we might be able to search to see if others were having the issue.

Sorry, but I do not have any more ideas of why this might be happening unless it might be somehow related to the heat generated? And that is why it only happens sometimes?

Maybe someone else will have some ideas.

Hi all, I have an Avell A60 MUV too, running Linux Mint 21 x86_64, Kernel 5.15.0-48-generic.
I've been having the same issue with the keyboard eventually stopping working after coming back from suspend.

Avell A60 MUV is an Intel QC7 laptop, also referred to as an Intel Whitebook.

I found on an Archlinux page https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_QC71 the following description:
"... A firmware or kernel bug causes ACPI PNP devices to appear as available, which in turn causes the i8042 module to detect AUX ports, which are probed during resume, and this causes the keyboard to cease functioning. A workaround is to add i8042.noaux to the kernel command line..."

I made two tasks:
  1. I have updated the BIOS of Intel Whitebook: the version is 0150 in the date of this post.
  2. I made the inclusion of that parameter in the GRUB configuration. For example ( https://askubuntu.com/questions/916465/ ... er-suspend), run

    Code: Select all

    sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Find the line that begins GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= and edit it to include the new parameter, so that after your edit it looks something like

    Code: Select all

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.noaux"
I'm still testing it. So far, the problem has not appeared again. I appreciate if you guys could test it and see if this workaround still works.

The fix seems to come in the Linux kernel 6.0, according to the Archlinux page.

A number of people have run into keyboard-not-working issues (on many different model laptops) and most have been able to workaround the issue with a variety of i8042 related kernel parameters.

It's good for those running Avell hardware that you have posted that which works for you.

Hi SMG,

This bug is spurious and has been occurring irregularly. I've been using this kernel parameter for two days now and I need more time to make sure it works, although the previously cited page about the bug has already proposed this solution.
I also think that having this solution working, I can forward it to the AVELL company, which can make the information available on its website.

I would be very grateful if mintpinky and vlms could verify that this solution works on their machines.

Hello everybody,

Since my last post, I haven't encountered any problems with my laptop with this parameter i8042.noaux included in the GRUB configuration file.
I can conclude that this issue can be marked as SOLVED.
