headset microphone issues

Post by mano123 »

Hi, there is a lot of problems that face everyday user, in some cases we must mention it up to be useful to others, i believe this is the way that we should do if we want to create powerful systems and preserve a large communities.
I'm not new to Linux i have installed and burn over 30 distros however I'm not that much in what when you deal with system issues, so here is my problem:

I installed Linux mint 20 ulyana cinnamon of course to be in noticed for the latest news, then i decide to use my mic in discord, but it doesn't work, i checked lots of people and forums and still, my computer is HP pavilion core i7, and the Linux kernel is 5.4.0-94-generic, of course i have two ports in the computer one for the sound and the other for mic, so i brought a headset with the same description and it still doesn't work, i conclude that it might be from the laptop jack (females), then i brought a converter which you plug in the usb and then put the headset jack in it, and still the same problem.

I will so happy if someone could help me, and thanks in advance.

Re: headset microphone issues

Help with sound is a hard topic, but I will try.

1. Check the headphones on other hardware ( this can be computer, phone )
to see if they work.
A burnt microphone is often a fault.

2. I want to know the exact model
About inxi viewtopic.php?f=90&t=318644

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxrzc0
Entering a specific model can help you search better sometimes.

3. Check with another app.
Loudspeakers: video , audio , with web browser [ YouTube , SoundCloud ].
Microphone: Audacity ( check every available channel in Audacity )

4. Check the audio settings.
Check with pavucontrol app.
There is a tab for the microphone. And there is a volume indicator from the microphone
As you speak, the indicator should increase.

The biggest problems are with pulseaudio.
It likes to set the sound from the monitor instead of the headphones. And likes to break.

5. Check sound from live-CD / live-USB.

6. Check with another kernel.

Newer kernel means newer drivers.
mintupdate app --> View --> Linux kernel
If you have newer installed, restart the computer and test it.

7. You can read also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

- the pavucontrol says there is no application recorded audio (I'm surly plugging the headset in my computer right now)

+ this is the inxi -Fxxrzc0 output

hello, thanks for replying sir
it didn't seems the alsamixer trick works, and yes i test the headset on another hardware and it didn't work either (i tested on windows), does that mean my headset mic not working? thus the headset speaker works fine. back in the day i brought an external mic to see if the problem from the hardware (the headset) itself but it won't work.

" Ubuntu Feisty, the ALSA drivers fully support the hardware used in the dv6000 series. "
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HP_dv6000_Serie ... hone_Jacks
not tested https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebia ... DV6_2113sa

i test the headset on another hardware and it didn't work either
The microphone is probably damaged / broken.
Try to check with different microphone which you know that it certainly works with different hardware.
