Up to yesterday, my USB 3.0 port was working (Fresco Logic 1000 USB 3.0).

Today it is not working; it seems to be undetected (no longer in the list of my USB).

I am now running kernel 5.4.96 (after today update), USB 3.0 not detected; today 5.4.94 (before update), USB 3.0 not detected; yesterday 5.4.94, USB 3.0 detected (I could make backups).

External disk is OK, it works on another USB (2.0) port. And nothing works on the USB 3.0 dedicated port (mouse, USB key, another USB 3.0 external disk...).

I have even booted on an external USB key with Mint 20.3 ISO: disk not detected on USB 3.0 port, detected on USB 2.0 one. Same result when booting on USB key with Foxclone: disks not detected on USB 3.0 slot, detected on USB 2.0 one (tested two USB 3.0 disks, one formatted with ext4, the second with NTFS°.

So, two possibilities:
- USB 3.0 Fresco hardware died between yesterday and today,
- Driver xhci_hcd is not loaded (when booting on my system and when booting on Linux Mint install ISO and when booting on Foxclone).

Is there a way to correct this by software? Or is it an hardware problem?

Regards,

MN

What do lsusb, lspci and inxi -v8 say about your internal USB-3 hubs and ports?
In each case with or without attached devices.

Re: USB 3.0 no longer available

Post by MikeNovember »

Hi,

This morning, after a night sleep, my computer wanted to have me please...

After start-up, I checked for the USB and the missing USB 3.0 port was there (Hub7):

Code: Select all

I could use my external USB 3.0 disk and make backups.

Several reboots, cold or warm starts, had not changed anything yesterday.

Just crossing fingers the problem does not arrive again.

Regards,

MN

PS:

Here are the requested outputs, when all works and attached devices.

I let this post open, with a question: is there a way to force the loading of the USB 3.0 driver when hardware, Fresco Logic FL1000G, is not detected?

[SOLVED?]USB 3.0 no longer available

Post by MikeNovember »

Hi,

I have solved the problem, at least up to now, with a GRUB change:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Then change the line [GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"] in [GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pci=nomsi, noaer"] (without []).

Once the change saved, GRUB us updated:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Hwo does it work?
pci=nomsi
nomsi [MSI] If the PCI_MSI kernel config parameter is enabled, this kernel boot option can be used to disable the use of MSI interrupts system-wide.
pci=noaer
noaer [PCIE] If the PCIEAER kernel config parameter is enabled, this kernel boot option can be used to disable the use of PCIE advanced error reporting.
A false hardware error detection or MSI interrupt will prevent the correspondig driver to be loaded during the boot. With these two parameters, there will be no longer MSI interrupt or hardware error reporting (false or true) and driver will be loaded in any case.

Hope this lasts...

Regards,

MN

And what the hell is an MSI interrupt? Do you have to know that?
To defuse my lack of knowledge, I asked DuckDuck, here is something about the interrupt, for example: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/367 ... nux-driver

Whether I'm a lot smarter now, I don't know...
