LM 20.3 not powering off properly anymore.

Post by Rey Philipp »

Hello everybody!

First things first:
I recently did the switch from Windows to Linux, since the time was finally ripe after Win11 etc.
I have been using and working on PCs since 1989, so i know my way around even on Command Lines etc.
So, i read a lot, tried several Distros and finally decided to use Linux Mint. Also, it was the only Distro that
worked pretty much right out of the Box. Except for the known Problems with RX 6700 XT. But i found the
Solution here on the Forums. Kernel 5.13 and current Firmware were installed and everything was fine for
several Weeks. But this Sunday, something changed:

When im powering off my PC, the Monitor does not power off completely anymore, it enters Standby (Power LED blinking).
Also, the Sound System isnt powering off anymore too. The PC itself is powered off though.

I did NOT touch any Setting in LM OR the UEFI. It all worked fine on Saturday, Sunday it doesnt.
Have been searching the Internet for a Solution, but i have not had any Luck so far. Its probably something
really simple im missing, but i cant figure it out. So, i decided to pick the Minds of the Community. Hope someone knows
whats up. Its not too bad if i have to turn everything off by Hand, but id rather like it if everything was working again.
Also, i tried upgrading the Kernel to 5.14 but obviously it didnt help.

Hello Rey Philipp,

I would do the two following things:

Open the update manager > view and look in the update history, which packages were installed on that day. Thereafter I would search the forum here to see, if one of the packages caused problems.

If I get stuck with the first step, I would restore a Timeshift snapshot that is before Sunday.

Hello HAWR!

I thought about that too, however, the last Updates were on Saturday to Thunderbird and other minor Upgrades
which should not influence how LM behaves at Shutdown. Ill wait a bit longer before i try reversing to a previous
Snapshot. Thanks for the help so far.

That is an odd issue. And technically, if the hard drive is stopping and turned off, then LM20.3 is powered off.

It's my understanding the operating system passes off to the hardware to do shutdowns--ie. The operating system does not shut down the hardware; it just sends the message to shut down the system. The firmware would then shut down the hardware. So unless Mint is somehow telling the monitor and audio to suspend rather than shutdown, I'm not aware of what the operating system might be doing.

Is there something different or special about how the monitor and the audio are connected to the motherboard?

Hello SMG

Yes, it is an odd Issue, especially since it worked normal for several Weeks.
Monitor is connected through Display Port and Audio by optical.
Both use their own Power Adapter.
I dont have a Snapshot from before the Updates, since i forgot to activate them.
So, i will have to reinstall at some Point and see if that works.

You could check to make sure you are running the most recent BIOS/UEFI. Or maybe something reset there?

Something like that could happen after a kernel update. Do you remember the update manager showing a message that a reboot was needed sometime around when this started? I don't mean after installing the 5.14 kernel, but back when you were running 5.13. Even if not, perhaps you should try reverting to an earlier kernel--all kernels that you've installed should be on your system unless you purposely deleted them. Always worth a try........
