[SOLVED] Dual Monitor issue (not Nvidia related)

Post by marcin_mint »

Hello, I have seen similar posts on this forum, but my issue seems to be a little bit different.
I have 2 MSI monitors connected to my HP laptop which are fairly new, one connected with hdmi-hdmi cable and the second one with a hdmi-usb-C cable. Both monitors are also connected to my company laptop (which is not running whilst observing this issue). I might also add that with the company laptop which is a Windows machine does not have any issues at all - the monitors are detected every time).
The problem with my Linux Mint HP laptop is that most of the times the 2nd monitor doesn't work and doesn't display absolutely anything. I say most of the times, because every now and then both screens are working.
The monitor that is working is the only active one, which i can tell by moving my mouse to each border of the screen, but it always remains partly visible, which indicates that no other monitor is active at the same time.
The 2nd monitor is detected every time by my laptop and when i disconnect the 2nd monitor and connect again, the active screen jumps to the 2nd monitor which before was black, proving that the monitor is working fine. While in this case i can move my mouse around and see it on the 1st (initially working) monitor, this is the only thing i can see there, apart from the black background. I have tried different things:
1) Checked the driver manager - nothing popped up.
2) Disconnected the Laptop monitor in the "Display" settings - absolutely no difference.
3) Tried booting up both with monitors connected and without.
4) Searched the web for solutions with no success.
Attached you will find a screenshot of my display settings and below the output of lspci and part of the inxi -Fx output. Would be grateful for any help.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware. Issues of this type are sometimes related to the capability of the hardware ports on the laptop

Please also provide the output of xrandr and enclose the results in code tags.

Driver Manager only provides third-party proprietary drivers. AMD graphics drivers are in the kernel and load automatically. However, many people with newer HP laptops have found their system runs better with the 5.14-oem kernel (which has newer AMD drivers). We would want to see the specifics of your laptop to know if that is an appropriate recommendation.

Your computer has a Ryzen 5000 series so I would recommend upgrading to the 5.14-oem kernel. Install the latest 5.14-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d
and reboot.

Could you please explain what version of Linux Mint you installed?
System:
Kernel: 5.13.0-41-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A Desktop: Gnome 3.36.9 info: xfce4-panel wm: Metacity 3.36.1
dm: LightDM 1.30.0 Distro: Linux Mint 20.3 Una base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal

Gnome is not a supported desktop environment for Linux Mint. It may be the reason you are running into issues.

The system is seeing both monitors. They are listed both in inxi output and in xrandr.
Graphics:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus ID: 04:00.0
chip ID: 1002:164c
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: amdgpu,ati unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa compositor: compton

OpenGL: renderer: AMD RENOIR (DRM 3.41.0 5.13.0-41-generic LLVM 12.0.0) v: 4.6 Mesa 21.2.6 direct render: Yes

In xrandr output, *= current resolution and += preferred resolution.

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3840 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384

Which connection, DP or the HDMI, is the one having the issues?

@SMG, thanks! This worked perfectly!

I have installed the XFCE version. For some reason i have 3 desktop types available before login, which looks also odd to me, hence i think it could be connected: XFCE, Ubuntu and Wayland. While XFCE looks the way it should (apart from the issue i reported), the Ubuntu and Wayland look the same compared to each other and look like a very poor Ubuntu version, without even the side bar.

It sounds like you somehow have a mix of Ubuntu and Mint. Ubuntu has both Wayland and X Server available, but Linux Mint only offers X Server. There is no option to get Wayland and it is not supported (or included) in Linux Mint 20 (or the upcoming Linux Mint 21).

Below I have posted your info and a sample of what it should look like if only Linux Mint Xfce is installed.
System:
Kernel: 5.13.0-41-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A Desktop: Gnome 3.36.9
info: xfce4-panel wm: Metacity 3.36.1
dm: LightDM 1.30.0

System:
Kernel: 5.14.0-1022-oem x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A Desktop: Xfce 4.16.0
tk: Gtk 3.24.20 info: xfce4-panel wm: xfwm4
dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 20.3 Una base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal

I have no guesses as to what happened to give you the results you posted.

I remember installing gnome tweaks for some reason but i don`t know if that has something to do with it?
Anyway, i am asking out of curiosity, since my problem has been resolved :)

You were putting Gnome tweaks on your Xfce? The output you posted gives the impression you installed the Gnome desktop because Xfce is no longer showing. That's a pretty sizeable tweak. ;)

I admit my mistake. I went on removing the gnome desktop, switching back to XFCE. I am pasting the commands, should anyone stumble upon the same issue:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-gnome-desktop

sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove ubuntu-gnome-desktop
Locked
