[SOLVED] Microphone and camera have stopped working on my laptop

Post by NeilUK »

I've dual booted a new win11 Medion E15407 with Mint 20.3 (based on Ubuntu 20.04). Using the supplied 5.4 kernel I had wifi problems, so upped to 5.13. When I first tested it, I had camera and microphone working, my notebook says 'cheese, camera working'. Testing it with a zoom call I found I had to plug in headphones, the internal speakers weren't working.

I eventually solved the speakers problem, which only occurs after a suspend/resume cycle, by rescanning the ALC256 PCI after resume, thanks to this Q/A here viewtopic.php?f=48&t=373788&p=2175491#p2175491

Now I have speakers working, but both the internal camera and microphone have stopped working, whether from a clean restart or a suspend-resume.
If I plug in a USB webcam, I can use its camera and microphone as expected.
I've rebooted with 5.4.0-110, and the first 5.13 I used, 5.13.0-39, and exactly the same problem remains.

Camera.
Neither cheese nor guvcview can find any devices.
sudo lshw -C video finds only the display controller, no camera.
ls -l /dev/video* finds no directory
Microphone.
Sounds preferences finds no input devices
If I start recording with audacity or arecord, it starts at full scale positive, which drops over one second or so to zero, with low level noise.

What else can I dump/explore that might provide a clue to what's happened? I know 5.13 had the right drivers, because they worked, once.

This is a laptop for my wife, I'm trying to convince her to switch from windows to Linux. I very nearly gave up and switched back, but helping her with a config problem on her old machine, I was reminded of the many reasons why I hate windows, so I'd like to give this one last go to get it working.

Re: Microphone and camera have stopped working on my laptop

Post by HAWR »

Hello NeilUK,

it's me again :D I've seen in the laptop manual, that there is a switch on the right side, which disables or enables the webcam and internal microphone (private mode). Maybe it's disabled?

Well hot damn! When all else fails, RTFM. That was easier than I feared. I must have knocked it to 'private' at some stage.

I had already figured out that both 'inputs' had gone, and google had found that some laptops have a BIOS setting to disable them. I was about to check that, but how could me fooling around at the OS and driver level have altered the BIOS?

The switch is labelled confusingly. The inputs are enabled when the switch is pushed to the left, towards the 'crossed out' icon. But I'll take 'working', however it's achieved!

Thanks again. Wife will be happy, or at least, I'll be happy on her behalf.
