[ABANDONDED] Touchpad right click and pointer not working

Post by claudiosala80 »

Hello all
When I boot my laptop, after a resume for a stand-by but also random while I am using, the touchpad is not working properly.
Right click is not working and if I move the pointer over a link or to close a window, also the left button doesn't work.
I tried all the common solution, but nothing.

The only way to restore is run these commands:
modprobe -r psmouse; modprobe psmouse

This is my xinput output

Code: Select all

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Re: Touchpad right click and pointer not working

Post by SMG »

The ALPS touchpad is been around for quite some time. There are some other drivers you can try as mentioned in the release notes:
Touchpad drivers

The default touchpad driver in this edition is "libinput" (provided by the xserver-xorg-input-libinput package).

If you experience problems with it, you can switch to another driver called "synaptics" (provided by the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package).

To know which driver is used by your input devices, run the following command:

Code: Select all

grep -i "Using input driver" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
When both drivers are installed, "synaptics" takes priority.

To switch to the "synaptics" driver, install it with the command:

Code: Select all

apt install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Then log out and log back in.

To go back to using "libinput", simply remove the "synaptics" driver:

Code: Select all

apt remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Then log out and log back in.
However, reading through what others with ALPS touchpads have tried, you may not see a difference between the drivers.

Perhaps if we check dmesg we might be able to see what is happening. The next time the touchpad stops working properly, run the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 50
and post the results here. Maybe that will help us find a solution.

First, thank you for your help!
I already tried the solution you proposed about the driver: I found in release notes of the last two or three versions, but didn't help.
I remember I tried other drivers than synaptics in addiont to the default one, but was long time ago and I don't remember wich ones.
Also the problem started with 20.2 and 20.3, while was not present in previous two ones (when I started to use Mint).

For me it is easy get the issue: if I put laptop in standby and after I resume the problem is present immediatly.
Here the output of the command

I presume the last two lines were after you ran modprobe. It looks like 50 lines was not enough lines to get back to when the computer was put to sleep. Let's try

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 200
and then I would also like you to run

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep 'Alps'

Re: Touchpad right click and pointer not working

Post by SMG »

This part does not look good.

Code: Select all

[gio giu 23 22:45:10 2022] unchecked MSR access error: WRMSR to 0x48 (tried to write 0x0000000000000000) at rIP: 0xffffffff9b4735a4 (native_write_msr+0x4/0x30)
[gio giu 23 22:45:10 2022] Call Trace:
I did a search on that and found a bug report Bug 203637 - unchecked MSR access error: WRMSR when resuming laptop which apparently was a problem on a number of different Dell laptops (and you have a Dell laptop). However, it is listed as RESOLVED CODE_FIX on a kernel series version older than the one you are using.

I also found this one Bug 208535 - S3 Mode Bug MSR - unchecked MSR access error (S3 is suspend state) which is also listed as fixed, but you would need a kernel newer than 5.10 for the fix.

I do not know if that will fix the right-click/pointer issue, but the 5.13 kernel is available in Update Manager if you want to try it.
Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

I notice the input number changes throughout the boot cycle which seems a bit odd. I'm not sure at this time what is causing that to happen.

It seems solved!

I did a quick test and seems ok. I will do deeper tests in next days

Thanks a lot!

Good to hear! If, after running your tests, it seems that fixed the issue, please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title so others know there is a solution in this topic.

Partially bad news: it seems the problem happen at the startup, but no more after suspend/resume.
And it seems it is stable after.

Do you need the same information I provided, but after the startup?

Thanks a lot for your help

Was it not working at start-up prior to the kernel change? I'm not completely sure based on your first post whether you only had to do the modprobe after a resume and "periodically" while running.

Let's just check the second one for now. See if it is any different.

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep 'Alps'

Yes, the problem was also at the startup but I workarouded it with a script on boot.
Now I removed and problem back on startup.

This is output of command

Code: Select all

claus@tiberio:~$ journalctl -b | grep 'Alps'
giu 25 08:37:58 tiberio kernel: input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint Stick as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input8
giu 25 08:37:58 tiberio kernel: input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input6
that seems correct (for what I understand).

I will do other test after weekend: the problem sometimes start when I open Skype and Chrome... but it is strange that starting an application impact on the hw configuration/drivers...

I would suggest putting the script back in unless that also means you would again have the problem after suspend.

That seems correct to me as well. Those would be the initialization of both devices.

I do not use either of those programs so I have no guesses as to why it might happen.

I will test in next 2/3 days.
Now I remove the script, started and seems ok. And I did for 2 times.

If the downgrade of the kernel solved, I will mark the post as you asked.

Thanks again!

I do not have any guesses as to why it is working sometimes, but not others. It is odd that nothing shows up in the log, but that makes it harder to find a solution.

I guess running the script when it stops working is the only option right now. Unfortunately, I do not have any other ideas. :(

Hello

This morning I connected an external mouse and I got same issue (mouse via usb key).
Sometimes I was suspecting an HW issue of the touchpad, but probably we can exlude.

What do you think?

The fact running the modprobe commands works would seem to indicate it is probably not a hardware issue. Somehow it is an issue between the hardware and driver, but, unfortunately, I do not have any ideas.

Hello

I take a new laptop and on new one touchpad is working.
Do I need to mark as resolved also if the real problem is not solved?

Now I need to understand how disable/enable touchpad when I rotate the screen and use laptop as tabled...but it is another topic!
