Activating Smartlink driver disables onboard sound

Post by remoulder » Sun Dec 13, 2009 8:05 am

LM8 main. If I enable the hardware driver for the Smartlink software modem daemon, on reboot no audio device is detected. Disabling the Smartlink driver re-enables the sound after reboot. Following reports without modem driver loaded.

Hi, when you right-click the Speaker Icon, and choose Sound Preferences, do both devices show up in the Hardware tab ?

Code: Select all

snd_hda_codec_realtek : Realtek HD-audio codec
snd_hda_codec_si3054 : Si3054 HD-audio modem codec

No I only get a single entry for internal audio which disappears if the Smartlink driver is enabled.

This may belong in the Bug Reports, here -> http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=164

I've created a new topic, and have linked this thread to it, emorph1 will look at it, and if it is, will post to Launchpad. Please watch that thread also, as you may get some replies there too.

Good luck, richy

This looks indeed like a bug of sorts but what is the Smartlink software modem?
I can't see it in your lspci and the Azalia audio should not even notice a modem

It's the driver for my laptop software modem. From Hardware Drivers dialog
The SmartLink modem daemon is the application part of the driver for recent modems produced by Smart Link Ltd.

This package replaces (along with hardware access drivers) the old driver generation (2.7.x) which consisted of kernel modules only.

It needs a kernel driver to access the hardware. This can be either recent ALSA (shipped with a newer kernel (>=2.6.4) with Alsa support and intel8x0m module) which is sufficient for basic operation and data/Internet connection, or the SmartLink kernel driver which is provided by separate packages which you can build using the source from the sl-modem-source package.

This driver enables the usage of many software modems, as commonly found in laptops.

If this driver is not enabled, you will not be able to use your modem

About what I expected, is it connected to USB?
It's not mentioned in lspci and it looks a bit to modern for a software modem

Don't think so, this is a 2 yr old laptop (Samsung R20) so it's on the system board. lsusb output is

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 058f:6366 Alcor Micro Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

the Alcor device being a multi card-reader

I have discovered that some laptops have internal devices - like wifi - connected to the USB
Here I can't find the modem and the ID you get from lsusb or lspci -nn is the thing to search for
Which "entry for internal audio" do you have in sound preferences?

Not sure what you're asking for Husse, sound preferences hardware simply says 'internal audio 1output/1 input stereo audio duplex'

Not sure if following helps

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#1
Codec: LSI Si3054
Address: 1
Function Id: 0x2
Vendor Id: 0x11c13026
Subsystem Id: 0x2117144d
Revision Id: 0x100700
Modem Function Group: 0x1

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#3
Codec: Realtek ALC262
Address: 3
Function Id: 0x1
Vendor Id: 0x10ec0262
Subsystem Id: 0x144dc511
Revision Id: 0x100002
No Modem Function Group found

Found the Bug Report, and the PulseAudio "new defect" card, see links below . . . it's either sound or the modem, but not both at the moment . . :(

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/394500
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... omments/34

Hopefully the fix will reach the next update of PulseAudio . .

I don't know if it's (easily) possible to make a launcher to toggle modem or sound on and off
