Black screen / frozen screen after resume from sleep mode or closing the lip

Post by neonicoo »

Hi,

I have an HP Zbook 15 G5 on which I have problems after leaving suspend or opening the lip. The screen remains completely frozen, either it remains black (with a small white line " _ " in the upper left) or it turns on but remains stuck on the login screen with everything frozen (keyboard, mouse and tty).

I am on linux mint 21 cinnamon with NVIDIA optimus technology.
The same problem occurs no matter if I am on dGPU, iGPU or NVIDIA on demand.

Also, the problem does not occur when the laptop is plugged on AC.

I've been browsing on google for hours and found that this problem seems to be quite common, and not only among linux mint users. However I have not found any functional solution so far. That's why I'm going to start again this subject a bit 'déjà vu'.

Usually, when you start finding others with the same computer but using a different operating system then the problem is hardware related.

Please provide your system information. Open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

It seems HP does have one newer BIOS/UEFI available. Version 01.20.00 indicates one of the fixes is "- Fixes an issue which causes a battery capacity error to occur when Maximize my Battery Health is configured in the BIOS." Given you indicate the issue only happens when using battery, maybe whatever change they have made might help with this situation.

I have updated the BIOS to 01.20.00 but the problem persists. Less often though, but it happens from time to time that the computer can't wake up from suspend.

Might the difference between the times it works and the times it does not work be how much power is left in the battery?

You mentioned in your original post:
neonicoo wrote: Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:15 amThe screen remains completely frozen, either it remains black (with a small white line " _ " in the upper left) or it turns on but remains stuck on the login screen with everything frozen (keyboard, mouse and tty).
but now you say the problem does not happen as often. Are the symptoms any different now with the newer BIOS/UEFI? For example, are you now only getting the white dash? Or always getting to the login screen? Or do both still happen?

If a BIOS update directly affected the situation (it now happens less often), that would seem to confirm this is a hardware-related issue.

Not sure if I should piggyback onto this thread, since I'm using a Dell laptop and not an HP, but this exact same problem is happening to me. I'm using a Dell XPS 13, circa 2014, and running Mint 20.3. The problem manifests as the screen going totally black, the entire system becoming unresponsive, and the "power" light remaining on (indicating that the device is still powered up and not sleeping). The only way to exit this frozen state is to long-press the power button, which power-cycles the device and reboots it. This happens sometimes (but not always) when Mint auto-suspends itself after a long period of inactivity, or when I manually choose "Suspend" from the Quit menu.

Are there any particular power/battery management settings I should try changing? Or maybe a BIOS setting that affects how Mint interacts with the battery and/or power supply?

You are running different hardware and a different version of the operating system. Per forum rules, please create a new topic for your issue and make sure to supply the information requested Section 5 of Forum Rules in your first post.
