Mouse wheel less responsive in Linux Mint 21

Post by PRSoftware »

Hello,

I just installed the upgrade of Linux Mint from 20.3 to 21 (Vanessa).

Since the upgrade, the wheel of my mouse (Logitech Mx Master 3) is less responsive than in 20.3 : in some applications (for example : nemo or celluloid) I must turn the wheel 3 or 4 times before it begins to react. In the other hand, other applications (like firefox) have the same comportment than before the upgrade.

In 20.3, the mouse wheel action was taken into account from the first notch in every applications.

I checked that no specific driver is installed for this mouse.

There is also nothing about this in the "mouse" section of the system parameters.

An other (maybe useful) information: this mouse has 2 wheels (the classic vertical wheel + an horizontal wheel) and the horizontal wheel seems to be not concerned by the problem.

Do you know a way to repair this issue ?

Seems weird that one wheel works and the other doesn't.

This is listed as Failed on Ubuntu 20.04 Jammy, which is what LM21 is based on.

For information, my mouse is not connected by bluetooth but with a specific Logitech USB dongle.

The command sudo dmesg |grep -i bluetooth gives no result.

I tested the bluetooth communication: it is operational, both for sending and receiving.

Sorry about that. It was a typo, should have been this command.

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg | grep -i Blue
But that is irrevelant now. Is the gesture happening in a particular program or when using all the time?

That command should have given you a message re-bluetooth, why it didn't I don't know why.
Yet the lsusb returned a bluetooth adapater.

Looking at your system, you have a 9yr old bios, so I'm thinking that the latest kernel is for later systems, maybe if you install an earlier kernel version it may work. The unfortunate thing nowadays is that newer O/S being released are for newer hardware, this leaving older hardware somewhat lacking support, which in your case maybe the case. If your mouse worked ok in LM20.3, then I'd suggest you go back to that.
You could try a live session of LM21 in Mate or Xfce and see if the mouse responds.
Other than that I can't help you much more than I already have. There are members here that are more knowledgeable than me, so hopefully some one will help you.

Thanks a lot for your support.

I know I have an old computer and it is also the reason why I installed Linux on it: to continue using this machine which is perfectly adapted to my needs and to have a light and updated OS.

Do you think it is risky to use a kernel 5.4 (the version provided with LM 20.3) with LM 21 Vanessa ? If yes, what are the risks ?

No it should be fine. When there are updates to the kernel, they are for patches and for newer hardware. The latest kernel for LM20.3 at this time is 5.4.0-124 which is supported until 2025, so you will be fine. If there are more updates then just apply them, until the mouse buttons play up again. I currently use the latest kernel 5.15.0-14, that supports the hardware that I have and with my new wifi card the old kernel didn't support it because it's the latest card out, hence newer kernels to support newer hardware.
