Wake up from suspend while laptop lid closed on Packard Bell - EasyNote laptop

Post by Nortonko »

Hello,

i am exactly in the same situation on my Packard Bell - EasyNote laptop. I can't wake it up. Only when i open the lid and press any key on the laptop keyboard. I would rather wake it up with an external keyboard.
I am not using docking station but the external keyboard an mouse is connected via USB hub.
I have the external monitors set up as the primary screen and the laptop screen is disabled.

Welcome to the forum, Nortonko.

Does the external keyboard work to wake the laptop if the lid is open?
Are there any settings in your computer's BIOS with regards to lid actions?

How do you have two monitors set up as primary? Are you mirroring them?

Hello,
the external keyboard don't work to wake the laptop even the lid is open.
There is'nt any settings in computer's BIOS with regards to lid actions.
Sorry i was wrong - first monitor is set as primary connected by HDMI and second as secondary connected by VGA. I am not using mirroring.

When you suspend the computer and then wake it, there are messages written which sometimes indicate power state changes on devices which happen during that process. The next time you resume from suspend run the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 200
That gives the last 200 lines in the log. Maybe it will indicate if any changes are happening to the hub.

As a test, have you tried connecting the keyboard directly to the laptop to see if it works to wake the computer? That might give an indication if the hub might be somehow related to the issue.

The laptop went into suspend mode at time: 11:15:17 2022. Then i woke it up with my laptop keyboard. however, there is no entry in dmesg during wakeup.

I did the test with an external keyboard connected directly to the laptop, not through the HUB, this had no effect. The laptop woke up only through its keyboard, not an external one.

Thanks!

Re: Wake up from suspend while laptop lid closed on Packard Bell - EasyNote laptop

During start-up, the HP keyboard is picked up. (The 200 lines was back into system start-up territory.) However, the numbers do not match exactly with what you posted earlier. The first line matches, but the rest are 2.1.1 which is not in the list. :? What is the output of lsusb?

I've checked a lot of logs of suspended computers. One thing I have learned is the printing of the logs to file sometimes does not happen until after the computer resumes from suspend. Apparently, the computer can go to sleep so fast that the queue of messages is not completely written until after the system resumes from suspend. The time gap between these first two lines is the time the computer was suspended.

At what point does the external keyboard start working again?

Re: Wake up from suspend while laptop lid closed on Packard Bell - EasyNote laptop

Post by SMG »

I have a wired usb HP keyboard attached to an HP laptop. I am able to wake my laptop with the external keyboard. I just checked dmesg and my messages are similar to yours in that the external keyboard is mentioned at start-up, but is not mentioned when waking the computer from sleep.

My greps are very similar to yours.

Code: Select all

$ grep . /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/product
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1.2/product:HP USB Multimedia Keyboard
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/product:EHCI Host Controller
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb2/product:EHCI Host Controller

Code: Select all

$ grep . /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/wakeup
/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1/power/wakeup:disabled
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1.2/power/wakeup:enabled
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1/power/wakeup:disabled
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/wakeup:disabled
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb2/power/wakeup:disabled
My keyboard is the Lite-On device in the below output.

Code: Select all

$ lsusb
