headphones via jack doesn't work

Post by MartinT »

Hello,

I have problem with my headphones connected via jack.
It doesn't work under linux. There is no problem in the windows, so it is not hw issue.
I tried standard things like

Code: Select all

alsactl restore
sudo alsa force-reload
pavucontrol
delete /home/YourUserName/.config/pulse and then pulseaudio -k
but without any progress.
I have Linux Mint 20.3 Una and Kernel: 5.15.0-46-generic x86_64.

Output from cmd pacmd list-cards in the attachment.

Does anybody know what could help ?

Information.

To post essential details of your PC setup: Plug in all relevant dongles, accessories, and peripherals. Then

Open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T), then copy-and-paste the following long line of green text into the Terminal window, then tap Enter...

Code: Select all

C=code];cd;echo "[$C`inxi -Fxxxmprz;sudo lshw -C sound;lsusb -vt;lspci -nn;lsblk -f;cat /proc/cmdline;dkms status;mokutil --sb-state`[/$C">mint.y;xed ~/mint.y
Within several seconds, xed text editor pops open, showing technical data useful for others to analyze PC & peripheral issues.

Copy-and-paste everything from xed into a Reply here. < The required [code] tags have been added for you >

It can be a hardware problem, because Windows may not release it to allow proper shutdown -- and UEFI can prevent proper hardware initialization.

Disable Secure Boot in your BIOS, because it's known to interfere with device drivers, firmware, and Linux (thanks, Microsoft). To see whether Secure Boot is currently enabled or disabled:

Open a Terminal (alt-ctrl-T) then copy-and-paste the following line of text into the Terminal window, then tap Enter...

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

Always for dual-boot with Windows: Disable Fast Startup in Windows, otherwise it can leave your hardware in a zombie state at any time. (I disable Windows Hibernate, which also disables Fast Startup.)

Hello,
secure Boot in BIOS is disabled.
I also checked opetion "fast startup" in Windows and it is already disabled.

mokutil --sb-state returns:

Code: Select all

EFI variables are not supported on this system

When you are not using headphone, where do you output audio? If it is through the monitor, then it is probably the same issue of what I faced before.

==TLDR==
Install https://yktoo.com/en/software/sound-switcher-indicator/ by typing

Code: Select all

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:yktooo/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-sound-switcher
From then on, manually choose between "Headphones" and "HDMI / Display Ports" when one want to switch the sound output device.

==Problem Behind==
Because there are 2 different audio controllers involved, the sound system can only auto-switch between "Headphones" and "Line Out" even if it can detect your headphone insertion. The audio controller that output sound to monitor via "HDMI / Display Ports" don't care the headphone insertion. So for now one has to switch output devices manually. The switcher indicator program is to make the manual switching faster and more convenient.

In theory if I could fixate my monitor to use the "Line Out" audio (independent 3.5mm audio cable to the monitor), I won't need such band-aid program. But after every time I turn off & on my monitor (or just entering & leaving power-save mode) this monitor is resetting the audio source to HDMI again. So I gave up. If your monitor behavior is different or if you have a pair of discrete speakers in spare, you may change the output device in the built-in Sound Preferences once and for all. Then you won't need to install any 3rd party programs.

The "MAG X570 Tomahawk audio jacks no sound" does happen in Windows, so it looks glitchy in hardware or firmware. Not just this one case reported.

New BIOS' for your MAG X570S TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI motherboard: Full 7D54v13 at MSI, dated 1-Jun-2022, has vAGESA ComboAm4v2PI 1.2.0.7.. There's a news release about that AMD code...

AMD Releases AGESA V2 1.2.0.7 Microcode to Motherboard Vendors and OEMs: "... adds official (stable) support for Ryzen 5000 series processors, letting those on the 5-year old platform enjoy an IPC uplift as much as 60% (Zen 3 vs. Zen). 1.2.0.7 is also rumored to address certain stability issues with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D ..."

Official AMD microcode for the Ryzen-5000 series is a wow for your Ryzen 7 5800X. I'd put a priority on that BIOS upgrade. Could jazz numerous things.

@billyswong:
I tried that app.

But it doesn't help at all.
Still no sound.

@hglee:
Yes, there could be something in bios. I didn't update that, yet.
I will let you know afterwards

If you right click volume control in systray > Sound Preferences > Output, is it already selecting "Connector: Headphones"? If yes, go to "Hardware" tab, when you select your USB Audio, is it already showing "Profile: Analog Stereo Duplex"? If still yes, then click "Test Speakers", can you hear sound from headphone by "Test"ing the "Front Left" & "Front Right"? If you select your HDMI/DP Audio Controller, can you hear sound from monitor by "Test Speakers"?

Edit: from your system report,

Code: Select all

Audio:
  Device-1: AMD driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 2f:00.1
  chip ID: 1002:ab28
  Device-2: AMD Starship/Matisse HD Audio vendor: Micro-Star MSI
  driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 31:00.4 chip ID: 1022:1487
  Device-3: Micro Star USB Audio type: USB
  driver: hid-generic,snd-usb-audio,usbhid bus ID: 3-5:2 chip ID: 0db0:a073
  Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.15.0-46-generic
The PulseAudio sound server is not listed. Is it running? You may take a look at ps -e | grep pulseaudio You may also take a look at Preferences > Startup Applications, and see if "PulseAudio Sound System" is listed after ticking "Show hidden".

Well... let's test if your situation is caused by an even older bug. In terminal, run alsamixer, F6 to select the non-HDMI sound chip, look if the "Headphone " or "Master" is muted there. If it is muted by ALSA, you will see a "MM" at the bottom. Press left or right to select the corresponding column, press "m" to unmute.
