Linux Mint Hangs with non-responsive mouse and Keyboard

Post by sengupta »

Mouse click usually does not work - unless clicked 15 times - any suggestion how to improve?
Desktop icons or browser or application windows to be clicked many times before they wake up.

I would start by ruling out it's a problem with your current mouse. Either hardware or software. Have you tried using a different mouse on this computer? Have you tried it on a different USB port?

I tried with two different mouses with the same problem. This is not a hardware problem. If the system is booted again then the mouse works fine.

Linux Mint hangs every now and then, the keyboard does not work - mouse does not work either.
The system needs to be rebooted to make it functional - if the system needs booting every 15 minutes then there is basic issue in its behavioral functionality which the design team needs to look into. Operationally, it is a piece of junk.

If your keyboard also doesn't work and the system hangs, this has nothing to do with the mouse but is some core hardware component having a problem.

I suggest you start by including your system information. Open System Reports from your menu, go to System Information on the left and then on the right click Copy and paste it here. Others will need to know these basics to be able to help on this.

Also suggest you edit the topic title (click the pencil icon in top right corner of your first post in the topic) and make clear you're having an issue with Linux Mint hanging. The more details you can give about what happens when it hangs, what doesn't work what still works (i.e., does caps lock key still toggle the indicator light on the keyboard?) the better help you can get.

Linux Mint is unusable

Post by sengupta »

The current version of Linux Mint is an unusable on my PC. The system hangs if the keyboard and mouse not used for 30 minutes - with everything non-responsive there after. You need to reboot - I did that and ended up losing 4 hours of work.

30 minutes is too close to not be related to power management I think. Suggest you check Power Management settings in Linux Mint for any option that currently says 30 minutes. Change them to never. That should be a stopover workaround.

There must be some issue with one of your devices and power management. Your Linux kernel may need some parameter to make its power management work properly with your hardware. Usually it's telling the kernel to pretend to be Windows towards the power management interface of your system. Figuring out what the problem with the power management support is is not my area of expertise. If the workaround I suggest holds up I suggest make a new topic for that.

This isn't anything Linux Mint can fix. It's between the Linux kernel and your systems manufacturers to properly support each other.

Are you running battery only or with the power pack plugged in all the time?

Otherwise everything looks as if it should work perfectly. I've done one HP Pavillion-g and I can possibly check in a few days, how it is going.

In System Settings > Mouse

Pointer size and speed - Have you modified Custom Acceleration or Custom Sensitivity?

If not have you tried adjusting them?

Double-Click Timeout, where is it set? Mine is about a third of the way along.

This thread is now redundant since the OP has started a new one: Linux Mint 20.3 hangs every now and then
