It apparently has been fixed. I still hear the fan, but it's not as terribly loud as before. So thanks.
Edit: Never mind, suddenly got loud again. It doesn't seem to be constant though.
HP's are Windows ONLY computers, and HP makes zero effort to support linux. It's amazing that we can even install linux on HP's, and then fan speed control is a very common problem. It's even common for Windows users, because HP firmware is a mess, but HP has a Windows only utility that enables a user to have more control over the fans. If you find a viable solution, there are a lot of people that will want to know what it is.
From Ubuntu:
If cooling fan in your laptop is always running, it could be that the hardware that controls the cooling system in the laptop is not very well supported in Linux. Some laptops need extra software to control their cooling fans efficiently, but this software may not be installed (or available for Linux at all) and so the fans just run at full speed all of the time.
Lenovo does a pretty good job, and most Dells. Check dells for the models that ship with linux, but not shipping with linux pre-installed doesn't mean that they won't work. Historically, some of the dells had a fan problem, too, but the fix wasn't difficult. It's generally best to not buy the latest model of anything if you plan to run linux on it exclusively. There is a lag-time between new hardware releases and linux catching up. All that said, some older HP's work fine, but you have to research which ones.
This is a cool site, but it takes time to poke through:
Thanks, I think I will go with Lenovo. Dell was actually the first laptop brand I bought, and I had a fine experience with it until 1 or 2 years later when the display battery ran out and I had to pay $99 for diagnosis (since I didn't know why the display kept turning off) and over $100 for replacement. I never had that problem with either of my HP laptops.
