Deep sleep option?

Post by jud »

Hi folks,

I installed LM21 with all the latest updates on my Ryzen Ideapad laptop and suspect that deep sleep is not working.
In power options, I have set suspend on lid close.
cat /sys/power/mem_sleep shows:
[s2idle]
I suppose it should show deep option as well like this: [s2idle] deep
Does this mean that my laptop does not support deep sleep option?
The laptop has 16 gb memory so I didn't create a swap. I am hoping for suspend to RAM.
PS. I have set this laptop to S3 suspend mode in the secret bios because without that resume does not work.
Thank you.

LM21 here also.

I do not allow any of that stuff, period.
no sleep,
no suspend,
no hibernate...

just set the Power Settings to blank the screen in 5 minutes of non-use

Lid Closed is set to "do nothing"

I am asking because I would like to put this laptop in deep sleep mode when I close the lid to save the battery.
Anyone knows if it can be done on this laptop and how?

IF,
I am off grid, and not using the laptop in real time, I shut it down.

Leaving it in suspend or 'sleep' mode is guaranteed to run the battery down.

I just make a point to save my work and exiting all applications first.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Many laptops nowadays do not offer the deep sleep. I am not familiar with a "secret BIOS" to enable it on laptop so I do not know how that might affect what the operating system sees when you put the computer to sleep.

I don't know if it will help or not with the deep sleep option, but with a 5000 series Ryzen I would recommend using a newer kernel.

If the 5.19 kernel is not yet available in Update Manager (View > Linux Kernels and click Continue), then you can see if either the 5.17-oem or 6.0-oem kernels work better for you. Others with 5000 series Ryzen have found improvements in the newer kernels.

You can install the latest 5.17-oem kernel with sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04 and reboot.

You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b and reboot.

Linux Mint will automatically boot to the highest installed kernels. I received a few reports of sound or WiFi problems with the 6.0-oem so if you have issues and need directions to boot with an older kernel and remove the newer one, just let us know.

Dell inspirion 15 3525 here ( has ryzen 5625u apu..which is a fairly similar processing chip to yours) running LM 21 cinnamon and previously ran 20.3 cinnamon.

I've tried multiple 5.4 kernels, multiple 5.15 kernels, and the 5.17 and 6.0 kernels smg mentioned for you to try.

I have yet to solve how to get my laptop to properly suspend ( aka sleep aka suspend to ram) and wake up regardless of how I put it to sleep or try to wake it up. ( and yes..tried Live boot lm 20.3 and LM 21 install drives too from within live environment to see what I missed vs fresh installs.) and I encountered same results of laptop LOOKS like it goes to sleep/suspend, but refuses to wake up,

I always end up having to hard power it off via pressing and holding power button for around 6 seconds. then pressing it again to turn it back on.

You have a very similar apu that I have, BUT..I am curious to see if any instructions here can help you solve this problem. Because IF such instructions can help you resolve the missions of successfully making your Lenovo laptop hibernate...chances are that's coherent enough for my mission too.

If I happen to see 5.19 kernel before any of you in this comments section , try it, and it works. I'll report back here given I have a very similar apu and my mission is pretty similar ( sleep for me..not hibernate though)

Beyond that..I apologize as I have nothing to add..other than what I've tried so far via SMG's instructions ....
Here's how mine troubleshooting journey has gone so far... viewtopic.php?f=18&t=385566. I only mention this to at least share info on what you can try or for you to rule out what all you HAVE tried so far (shrugs)
