RX 6600 has seemingly unsolvable problem

Post by Hausemaster »

i've seen others are having a similar problem with there 6600's but none of there fixes seem to solve my problem of the
GPU becoming unresponsive and then my screen becoming garbled pixels.
Image
it could range for as long as a few minutes to being able to play for hours before I have to restart when it happens
oddly enough it seems to be sometimes better and worse depending on the kernel I use
not sure what to do at this point :(

Hi Hausemaster and welcome to the forum.

To be in a position to help you we need to know the full details of your computer.

If you click on the Start button and type - system reports – and then launch / run that program. Next, on the left hand side of System Reports window, click on System information, then the Copy button.

Come back here and Paste.

That will give us the details of your computer and then someone will be able to help.

If you’re Terminally based then open your Terminal and paste

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
into it and then hit Enter/Return.

Go to Edit, Select All, and then Copy, come back here, click on the code tags, </>, and then paste, Ctrl V.

This is a guess, Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kisak-kisak-mesa-focal.list

Could you explain why/how you did this?

And this one as well:
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu.list
1: deb https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/22.20/ubuntu jammy main
Just why? The drivers are already in the kernel itself that comes with Mint. This is not Windows.

I shouldn't have done that but honestly was getting desperate for something if anything to fix the problem
this has been an issue since I got the card and was hoping it was not the card itself
i'll remove the repo's and if that dosn't fix it im not sure what to do either than getting a even newer kernel or just getting another gpu

Honestly looks like a GPU failure. I've seen that kind of screen many times in Windows.

The 5.15 as shipped in Mint 21 should be fine for that card. I have its newer sister model 6650 XT with the same graphics chip, only slightly higher clock speeds.

Does that only happen when gaming, or also during normal desktop use such as web browsing?
or just getting another gpu
That's the most likely outcome.

You could try https://benchmark.unigine.com/superposition - that's a benchmark that will put a lot of stress on the GPU, especially in "high" or "extreme". For me, that works absolutely stable. Keep also an eye on the maximum GPU temperature that is displayed after the run.
also randomly it will restart after going to sleep somtimes but thats another issue :(
I've seen reports on RX 6000 even under Windows where the solution was to disable some energy saving settings. In Cinnamon, the equivalent is Start Menu, Preferences, Power Management, then setting monitor suspend to "never". I did that because the GPU would not wake up occasionally, the screen would stay black, and only a hard reset of the PC would help.

Btw., your BIOS is pretty old - I'd update that to the current one for the Asrock B550M Pro4: https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B550M%20Pro4/#BIOS

Also, what's the wattage rating of your power supply unit?

ah yes I forgot about the bios, always thought of it as a dont bother thing
the gpu has never overheated while i've owned it and I guess i'll try a few more things before starting a support ticket to XFX for either a new one or my money back
My power supply is a Gold efficiency 550 Watts and the system as a whole has never drawn more than 300
i'll run the benchmark and update the bios, hopfully that'll work

Thought it was solved but only for my 570, still happens on the 6600
I'm going to try a few more things and then see if I can rma it if the problem persist :(

Is it only certain apps which do this? If so, check this [SOLVED] Strange visual artifacts in many apps like gimp and libreoffice in Mint 21 Cinnamon. Apparently, there is a mesa fix in the pipeline and until then people can use a PPA to get a newer mesa version.

Edited because the fix is supposed to be in mesa 22.2 and you already have that version with the kisak-ppa.
