Fn volume keys and other keys get stuck on Samsung 550XDA

Post by magnus9999 »

Hello!

Since this post is not marked as "solved" and I have the same problem, I think I can contribute with more infos.

My notebook is a brand new Samsung, it came with Windows 11 pre-installed. This fn issue doesn't happen with Windows.

What happens exactly is that when I press the fn key together with the volumes keys (F7 and F8 in my case) it gets stuck and turns down completely the volume or turns up completely. The same happens if I press it briefly, (unlike with the person who started this topic).
Also, my keyboard too get stuck, I can no longer use its keys, neither for typing nor for shortcuts. The only shortcut the works is ctrl + alt + del, which pops up the power off / restart options. The volume icon too doesn't respond if I try to click on it. The only way to restore it's functions is to restart or put it to sleep and wake it back up.

The display that appears on the screen when using the fn functions also get stuck quite some time on screen.

I think that's it. Maybe this extra infos can help someone to figure it out.

Here is info about my laptop:

Welcome to the forum, magnus9999.

You have a Samsumg, but the person in the other topic has a Lenovo. Also, the problem you describe is not exactly the same so you get to have your own topic specifically for your issues.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -i 'kbd\|i8042'
and the output of

Code: Select all

xinput
Do you know if your system is running the most recent BIOS/UEFI?

I don't know if it's the most recent version. The date seems recent, but it seems to be very difficult to find out which is the most recent version released by Samsung. I tried to find out in Samsung's website but couldn't find the exact model.

Edit:
Still couldn't find the latest release, nor in samsung's website neither in AMI's website.
But I did find tools to update firmware. One from Solvusoft and another from Samsung-drive.com, but both only works in Windows,

So I'm thinking, this is a dangerous procedure, should I really do it?

I am not at all familiar with Samsung computers so if you are not comfortable with the information you have, then I suggest not doing it. I can not provide any help.

Your dmesg output is similar to someone I helped who had an HP computer. Their issue with their keyboard was slightly different, but they found using the i8042.dumbkbd=1 kernel parameter made things better overall. (It did prevent their caps lock LED from working, but that was an acceptable trade-off for them.) Others have also found that parameter helpful with keyboard issues.

If you want to give it a try, you can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it. If you need more details than that topic provides, just let us know.

Hello.

I tried to add the parameter temporarily and permanently. The problem persists.

I also remember that some error messages were appearing on boot, but I don't think it's related:

Code: Select all

[ 8.257065] ACPI Error: Aborting method \_TZ.FNCL due to previous error (AE_NOT_FOUND) (20210730/psparse-529)
[ 8.257073] ACPI Error: Aborting method \_TZ.FN04._ON due to previous error (AE_NOT_FOUND) (20210730/psparse-529)
It seems to be related to Power Interface. And the answers to this messages are always "ignore it" or "hide it"

Thank you for your help so far.

If this parameter is not working then you should remove it.

You indicated in your original post that if you put the computer to sleep and then wake it, the keys start working again. The next time you do that, run the following command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | tail -n 200
Maybe it will indicate what is being changed so we can figure out why the problem is happening.

I don't think they are. If they were related then the keyboard would probably not work at all when you start up. That is not what is happening.

Actually, just ending the session and reentering usually fixes it.

I did the test suggested by you, and also did one before and one after, so I could check it whit diff.

Here is the after outcome:

What is "the session"? I do not know what you are referencing when you use the term. What are you doing to "end the session"?

User session. When you click on the mintMenu, the second to last option is logout. Then I click on change user and it goes to the login screen, prompting for the user and password to get in.

I'm translating it because my Mint is not in english, so maybe it could be something different.

But here is a picture I've found:

That is what it is called. I'm glad I asked because I thought you meant a session to be before you suspended the computer because you mentioned suspending in your first post.

When you log out and log back in again, that restarts X server. X Server runs all the user interfaces which include the keyboard. So the keyboard gets re-initialized when you log out and log back in.

When you suspend the computer and then wake it, X Server does not restart. Returning from suspension is when I usually check the dmesg data for clues.

I see now.

Well, I did the test again, before and after. The diff shows 400 lines, so I think it's no use.

Here is the after output that you asked for:

Re: Fn volume keys and other keys get stuck on Samsung 550XDA

Post by SMG »

While I see a lot of ACPI issues (which could only be resolved with a BIOS/UEFI update), I do not see anything which looks like it might specifically relate to the keyboard. There are some lines which might relate to the touchpad, but I do not know whether the keyboard and touchpad on this computer are one connected device.

Is there anything in the BIOS/UEFI which might relate to the keyboard or function keys?

We will have to see if someone else might have ideas.

The keyboard and the touchpad are not connected together, at least on the outside. I don't know if this could mean build in together from the inside.

This is it:

There is just a few options in the UEFI, but I didn't find anything related to keyboard.

The "right click" doesn't work in the touchpad, in Mint, only with a regular mouse. Don't know if maybe it has something related..
