Fans can't be controlled normally for ASUS AMD laptop

Post by mannyaloevera »

I can't get the fans on my laptop to run while using Mint. I have a dual-boot setup on a ASUS laptop. While using the Windows partition the fans run fine, but as soon as Mint loads they go silent and I can't get them to run. When Mint starts it flashes an ACPI error (see image).

Weirdly enough they occasionally partly turn on if I use something really CPU intensive like Fraqtive (fractal generating software) but otherwise they stay completely off and the laptop overheats until it does an emergency shutdown.

Things I've tried based on other posts here:

- sudo sensors-detect
- install thermald
- using fancontrol-gui (which uses lm_sensors and fancontrol). It detects system temps correctly but never actually turns on the fans.
- disabled Windows Fast Startup and Secure Boot in the BIOS
- updated BIOS version
- changing a line in etc/default/grub file:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

changed to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=LINUX"

Interesting project:
https://asus-linux.org/

and specifically this:
https://gitlab.com/asus-linux/asusctl

You will be probably required to install a newer kernel,
for instance linux-oem-22.04b

It seems like it's the most recent kernel available?

You may not have understood MiZoG's post. OEM kernels do not show in Update Manager until you install one. However, they are available in Synaptic Package manager or you can install them from the command line.

You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b
and reboot.
