M92 [mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series]

Post by JosBR »

Hi all,

Here is the info on my hardware graphical card:

*-display UNCLAIMED
description: VGA compatible controller
product: M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series]
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm pciexpress msi bus_master cap_list
configuration: latency=0
resources: memory:d0000000-dfffffff(prefetchable) ioport:2000(size=256) memory:fc000000-fc00ffff memory:fc020000-fc03ffff(prefetchable)

When I click "hardware drivers" in the control center, I get the message that ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver is available.
Message also says that it is tested by LinuxMint developers.

But I am scared to install the driver, because when I did this with a previous install of Linux Mint it blew up my whole system.

When I go here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... inux%20x86

I get:

Name File Size Revision Number Release
Date Download
Link
ATI Catalyst™ 9.12 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver 81.0 MB 9.12 12/17/2009 Download
Description:
Automated installer and Display Drivers for X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, or 7.4

The drivers above support English only.
The display driver requires POSIX shared memory to be enabled on the system.
Kernal Sources package is no longer required if Kernel Header package is installed.
32-Bit packages must be installed for 64-Bit Linux drivers to install or work.

Questions:

What should I do?
Shall I click Activate in the Hardware drivers screen?
Shall I download and install the driver from www.support.amd.com??
if the new driver install does not work? How can I roll back to the previous driver?? Even when I do not have a screen ( it might be black) available?

Thanks for any help.

Jos, your card is supported by the proprietary ATI drivers so it should be ok to instlall them either by using the Hardware Drivers app which is the recommended way, or directly from the ATI site. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI for more detailed instructions.

After installing, be sure to completely reboot. If you are faced with a black screen, try rebooting again and entering the recovery mode at the grub menu, then when you reach the menu, go to a root prompt and run the command sudo aticonfig --initial -f. The password is just your user one. If you're still stuck after rebooting again, boot from the live cd and post again. HTH

Hi Mike,

I took the risk and followed your instructions.
After restart it worked perfectly. No black screen or other trouble.
