My power button no longer does anything
Okay, it does one thing: if I hold it for long enough, it'll do a forced shutdown.
But aside from that, it does not power on nor power off my laptop (that is, suspend it), it does not ask for any of the 4 power-off options (I'm including "cancel" here), and I've tried changing the logind.conf file, as well as double-checking to make sure I had my Power Management settings correct, which incidentally also made me realize that closing my lid doesn't do anything either, even when I have it set to something like "shut down immediately." It's like Mint doesn't even recognize that the power button and lid are even there anymore.
How can I fix this? It's incredibly tedious to have to go to the power-off settings from the menu every single time, especially if I'm on campus and just using my trackpad. There's no way this is expected behavior. I only installed Mint, like, a week ago and this is driving me up the wall.
I've asked this question in the "Beginner's" section thinking it might be common (previous thread: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=389216), but more Googling has yielded zero results, so I'm hoping this part of the forum might be able to help. Also, I'm very new to all things Linux, so if there are file-modifying directions, I ask that you direct me on where to locate such files; thank you in advance!

Re: My power button no longer does anything
A couple of things to try.
Can you boot into Live Mint and see if you get the same behaviour.
Can you make another User and see if the same thing happens. (can be deleted after the problem is fixed)
In your reply, it wouldn't hurt to follow number 5 in the following link:

Just realized I didn't mention architecture! 64-bit. My inxii report is in my signature. I'll try your tips out, but for now I have to head to lectures, so I'll have to do them later tonight.gittiest personITW wrote: ⤴Tue Jan 17, 2023 1:21 pm In your reply, it wouldn't hurt to follow number 5 in the following link:

Also, when you say "live mint," do you mean a USB drive with the ISO flashed onto it? Just to be sure I'm aware of correct terminology.

Yes - the installation media.
That way we can see if it is your system or just the settings in your installation.

Re: My power button no longer does anything
Gotta find my boot drive, but this didn't work at least. In the other thread I linked, I mentioned that what I think happened (in horribly inexperienced language) is that, for some reason, after my Mint installation, Mint sort of "forgot" to talk to my power button, and now doesn't even know where it is. However, this still doesn't explain why shutting the lid also does nothing. I'll still have to try out the Live Mint approach and get back to you.gittiest personITW wrote: ⤴Tue Jan 17, 2023 1:21 pm Can you make another User and see if the same thing happens. I should also mention, in case relevant: my power button has a fingerprint sensor, and a few days ago I tried following this viewtopic.php?f=90&t=353342 thread in order to set it up, until eventually I decided it was far more trouble than it was worth. Maybe that setup affected things? It still doesn't explain the lid, but I'm the newbie here, so I assume more information is appreciated, if perhaps unnecessary.

Re: My power button no longer does anything
So could it simply be the settings have been changed?
If it isn't in system settings but a bit deeper and you aren't sure exactly what has been done, could you do a Timeshift restore?

Perhaps, but I have no idea how to actually do that, or what that really does. Will my files/themes be saved? And also, I don't know if my Timeshifts are old enough for it to be any different.gittiest personITW wrote: ⤴Wed Jan 18, 2023 12:15 pm So could it simply be the settings have been changed?

Also, I’ve just tried with my bootable drive, and the power button still doesn’t work. Looks like it stopped working ever since I switched.

Re: My power button no longer does anything
Good morning,
I don't know if this will be helpful, and you may have already tried this, but I recently installed Mint on a newly acquired Lenovo ThinkPad X260, and the power button behaved a bit differently than I was used to on my older Lenovo IdeaPad. On the X260 I now have to hold the power button down for 2-3 seconds before I get the shut down window. On the IdeaPad I got the shut down prompt immediately after pushing the power button. Have you tried holding down the power button for an additional second or two to see if you then get the shut down window?
Again, sorry if this seems obvious, and if you have already tried this, never mind. But I was surprised by this button behavior and thought I would mention it.
Good luck!

Re: My power button no longer does anything
As a workaround,
Could you go to Menu/System Settings/Keyboard/Shortcuts/System.
Make a keyboard shortcut for shutdown/suspend.
Personally, I use CTRL+SHIFT+TAB for suspend.
Works nicely and is very convenient.

Yeah, this is sorta what I went with, only my shortcut of choice was Super+Del. I might label this as "closed" to showcase that I kinda came to my own conclusion, but I'll hold off on that for a little bit until I'm sure I've exhausted every other option.gittiest personITW wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 29, 2023 5:43 pm As a workaround,

Spacebar. Any keyboard key will do, but that's the one I've settled into a routine with.
Honestly, that parts the least annoying, all things considered. When I had windows the thing just booted up when I'd open the lid, which was awful. Yet another reason to be happy for having switched, I suppose! Haha.
