Hello,
both trackpoint and touchpad stopped working on my ThinkPad E560 on which I had Linux Mint installed since I bought it new in 2016. This happened recently while running Linux Mint 19.3.
I have now installed Linux Mint 21.1 and trackpoint and touchpad still don't work. I also updated the kernel from 5.15 to the latest 5.19.

Hi SMG, thanks for your suggestion. Which kernel versions can I try, other than 5.15 and 5.19, that will still allow Mint 21.1 to perform correctly? Also, how far back can I go?

The person in the other topic mentioned 5.15.0-56 worked for them. If that is not installed on your computer, you can install it with Update Manager.

Obviously I still hope it is a software problem that can be solved rather than the hardware. Could it depend from a driver?
Unless you changed a driver or there was a backported patch in the kernel which changed how the driver functioned, then it likely is a hardware issue.
Do you have an install usb/dvd from an LM19.2 or older version? If so, test it and see if they work. The kernels on those are old enough that should give an idea if a kernel update cause the issue or something else happened.
My laptop does not have a trackpoint, but it does have a touchpad. This is my output.
Hi SMG,
I tested LM19.2 with a bootable usb and still trackpoint and touchPad didn't work. Unfortunately it looks like it is a hardware problem. At least I know for sure.
Thanks again for your help.
I'm very happy of course but not sure about the cause of the issue, maybe a temporary hardware failure or some updates since I keep updating the system as I re-install software.

Unexpectedly trackpoint and touchPad are working again!
Don't reboot!
(Just joking.)

I didn't realize Lenovo used ALPS. I've helped some people with Dells and ALPS who were having issues.

I checked the kernel changelogs and there was a fix put in 5.15.0-58, but I thought you already tried that kernel.

Yes I tried 5.15 and 5.10. I tried LM19.2 (without installing it), then back to LM 21.1 with the latest kernel 5.19.x. Touchpad and trackpoint still weren't working until yesterday.
That will give us something we can check should they decide to do another disappearing act. I expect those inputs also show up in the Xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log).
