TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working on ThinkPad E560

Post by va8abond »

Hello,
both trackpoint and touchpad stopped working on my ThinkPad E560 on which I had Linux Mint installed since I bought it new in 2016. This happened recently while running Linux Mint 19.3.
I have now installed Linux Mint 21.1 and trackpoint and touchpad still don't work. I also updated the kernel from 5.15 to the latest 5.19.
When entering

Code: Select all

  cat /proc/bus/input/devices | grep -i touchpad
nothing shows.
The following is the output from inxi -Frxxxzc0

Welcome to the forum, va8abond.

Several people in this topic with Lenovos
(""Solved"") LM 21(.1) Cinnamon: Touchpad, Touchscreen and Pen on Lenovo Ideapad stopped working after software update
found rolling back to an older kernel worked. If you need help or instructions to try that option, just let us know.

If that does not work, what is the output of

Code: Select all

Hi SMG, thanks for your suggestion. Which kernel versions can I try, other than 5.15 and 5.19, that will still allow Mint 21.1 to perform correctly? Also, how far back can I go?

The person in the other topic mentioned 5.15.0-56 worked for them. If that is not installed on your computer, you can install it with Update Manager.

Hi SMG,

I tried 5.15.0-56 kernel but the issue persists. The following is the output of xinput:

Code: Select all

 xinput
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ MOSART Semi. 2.4G Wireless Mouse id=9	[slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3	[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8	[slave keyboard (3)]

↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=12	[slave keyboard (3)]

Both trackpoint and touchPad had been working without issues with older Linux Mint versions including Linux Mint 19.3 until they stopped working.

Obviously I still hope it is a software problem that can be solved rather than the hardware. Could it depend from a driver?

Thank you for your help.

Unless you changed a driver or there was a backported patch in the kernel which changed how the driver functioned, then it likely is a hardware issue.

Do you have an install usb/dvd from an LM19.2 or older version? If so, test it and see if they work. The kernels on those are old enough that should give an idea if a kernel update cause the issue or something else happened.

My laptop does not have a trackpoint, but it does have a touchpad. This is my output.

Code: Select all

xinput
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=10	[slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3	[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=9	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ HP WMI hotkeys id=11	[slave keyboard (3)]
When comparing to yours, it seems your system can not see the trackpoint or touchpad.

Hi SMG,
I tested LM19.2 with a bootable usb and still trackpoint and touchPad didn't work. Unfortunately it looks like it is a hardware problem. At least I know for sure.
Thanks again for your help.

Unexpectedly trackpoint and touchPad are working again! This is now my output:

Code: Select all

xinput
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]

⎜ ↳ AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint Stick id=13	[slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3	[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Integrated Camera: Integrated C id=10	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11	[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=14	[slave keyboard (3)]

I'm very happy of course but not sure about the cause of the issue, maybe a temporary hardware failure or some updates since I keep updating the system as I re-install software.

I checked the kernel changelogs and there was a fix put in 5.15.0-58, but I thought you already tried that kernel.

Let's see the output of

Code: Select all

Yes I tried 5.15 and 5.10. I tried LM19.2 (without installing it), then back to LM 21.1 with the latest kernel 5.19.x. Touchpad and trackpoint still weren't working until yesterday.

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | grep -i "Alps"
doesn't return anything!

That will give us something we can check should they decide to do another disappearing act. I expect those inputs also show up in the Xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log).

I suppose they do but it's a very long file! I'll keep it in mind for the future, thank you.

Touchpad and trackpoint have been working since. (I did cross my fingers the first few times when rebooting! )
