webcam no longer recognised

Post by haughtonomous »

Good day,
I have a Logitech USB webcam (model unknown) which I have used with Linux Mint for many years (since first installing Mint) but not recently for a while. I am using the latest Mint 18.3 kernel (4.15.0-202-generic).

Today I am trying to use the webcam for the first time since before several kernel upgrades, and I find it isn't recognised. This is the system log when the webcam is plugged in:

Jan 27 13:54:48 study mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 14: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.6/2-1.6.3"
Jan 27 13:54:48 study mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 14 was not an MTP device

Why is it being treated as an MTP device? Is there anything I can do about this to get the webcam recognised? I don't want to have to buy another webcam for what is very occasional use if there is some switch that can be added to convince mtp-probe to recognise it correctly.

TIA....

Try a live install USB of LM 21 or LM 20. If the webcam is recognized there I would consider a fresh install of a supported LM OS.
