Problems with external monitor after upgrading from 19.3 to 20.3

I've just upgraded from Linux Mint 19.3 to 20.3. Before the upgrade my external monitor worked fine with the resolution set to 1920x1080, there were no problems with it. I do not recall the refresh rate that was set.

However, problems started after the upgrade to Linux Mint 20:

(1) If I leave the refresh rate of the external monitor at the default 60Hz for the 1920x1080 resolution, the screen is mostly black but the picture does appear for short intervals (with a good quality)
(2) If I change the refresh rate to 15Hz (same resolution) the picture is present at all times, but it flickers due to the low refresh rate (so I can use it, but it gets quite annoying)
(3) Resolution 1600x900 also does not work with 60Hz, but lower resolutions do work on this refresh rate (for example 1280x960)

Note that the display on my laptop works fine, the problem is only with the external monitor. I tried using a different HDMI cable, but the problem persists.

In the meantime I noticed that I was using an older version of the nvidia driver (470), have now updated to the latest recommended one (525), but the issue still remains. I'm posting the new output to the inxi and xrandr commands:

As a test I connected my friends HD monitor and it worked fine with the 1920x1080 resolution on 60 fps. But my monitor still refuses to work nicely after the upgrade... I'm quite lost

If this is the correct link Product support for ROG GL552VW, the latest BIOS/UEFI is version 304 so your system is missing a few. Perhaps an update will help because update can sometimes affect ports.

Thanks for your detailed response and apologies for a delay in replying - I was trying a few different things, but unfortunately the problem still persist.

To summarize, the problem is that my external monitor Asus VX229H no longer works nicely on resolution 1920x1080 with 60Hz refresh rate (screen goes black occasionally) when connected to my Asus GL552VW laptop, even though it worked perfectly before my upgrade from Linux Mint 19.3. Instead I'm running it on 30Hz, which is generating annoying flickering.

Tried the following:
  • I bought a new 4k 60Hz HDMI cable to connect my laptop and monitor, but didn't help - the problem persists.
  • I've plugged the same (Asus VX229H) monitor to my daughter's Windows 10 laptop and the monitor works fine on 1920x1080 with 60Hz. So the monitor seems to be OK.
  • I've connected my laptop to my friends FullHD monitor (iiyama) and it displays fine on 1920x1080 with 60Hz.
Looks like there's a problem with my laptop serving this specific monitor at FullHD (1920x1080) on 60Hz, even though all worked perfectly before my upgrade from Linux Mint 19.3.

Since my original post, I've upgraded BIOS to the latest version, upgraded to Linux Mint 21 (Vanessa) and installed latest nvidia drivers. Here is the output of the inxi and xrandr commands:

I see you upgraded in place. Have you tried a live session of Linux Mint 21 to see if the external monitor works properly?

Your system is booting in UEFI-[Legacy] mode instead of its native UEFI mode. I didn't notice that earlier or I would not have asked about Secure Boot. One can not use Secure Boot when booting in Legacy mode.

The xrandr output does not seem to indicate the external monitor needs Nvidia (which is also what your original data indicated because the driver was not even loaded at that time).

The only thing unusual I noticed was the two versions of 1080 showing on external monitor. Notice the first is preferred, but the second is the current. I don't know how that migth be changed because I don't know what you are seeing in the Display app.

I'm not sure what you want us to see. This file (as indicated at the top) is not to be modified. What it does show is that you have not yet deleted the old kernels (5.0 and 5.4) from your LM19.3 and LM20 installs.

It also indicates you are using the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter. Is there a specific reason you are doing so?

Yes, I tried this the other day and the problem with the monitor persisted.
The only thing unusual I noticed was the two versions of 1080 showing on external monitor. Notice the first is preferred, but the second is the current. I don't know how that migth be changed because I don't know what you are seeing in the Display app.
The first one appears in the Resolution list only when I select 60Hz refresh rate. It is the preferred one, but that's the one I'm having problems with - if I select it the screen randomly goes blank. The second one appears in the Resolution list if I select 30Hz refresh rate (that's the one I'm currently using). These are the Display app screenshots with the current resolution selected:

That is often an indication the problem is somehow related to the hardware and not the operating system. It may just be a coincidence the issue came up when you switched Linux Mint versions.

I wanted to see if this info indicated the Nvidia only renders (ie. no ports for monitors) and that does appear to be the case.

You are not using nouveau drivers so I would not think it is really doing anything unless you switch back to using nouveau.

I don't know why the monitor is now being picky about working, but one big change between LM19.3 and LM21.1 is the Intel driver and it runs the display even when Nvidia is rendering. Let's see if adding the panel self-refresh kernel parameter i915.enable_psr=0 helps. It's a shot in the dark, but maybe we get lucky. You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it.

Hello LM Forum,

I have the same problem. My second monitor stays black, but is recognized in the Display settings.

What is best on this forum, should I start a new post?

I don't know why the monitor is now being picky about working, but one big change between LM19.3 and LM21.1 is the Intel driver and it runs the display even when Nvidia is rendering. Let's see if adding the panel self-refresh kernel parameter i915.enable_psr=0 helps. It's a shot in the dark, but maybe we get lucky.
Unfortunatelly that didn't help. I think I'm gonna give up and use a different monitor.
