[SOLVED] New build Ryzen5 5600G -- are the USB and PCI problems fixed yet??

Post by lostsoul »

I decided to update my desktop machine and settled on the Ryzen5 5600G APU and either an Asus or Gigabyte motherboard [leaning towards Gigabyte based on value for money]. I am opting for the B550 chipset as I do not want another fan whirring away on the X570.

My research turned up that both the B550 and the X570 chipsets have issues with USB dropout and PCI working properly; the latter is significant since I was planning to install a PCI NVMe SSD drive. I put the brakes on.

Reading on a lot of different sites I learned that there were 'band aid' solutions such as downgrading PCI version in the BIOS and that AMD had 'identified the root cause' of the issues. AMD put out an updated BIOS file and the various manufacturers tweaked it to their needs. Those manufacturer specific updates came out November/December 2022.

The updates were supposed to fix the aforementioned issues. However, I read complaints about the issues still persisting afterward. So I am baffled and stalled: I do not want to build a machine that will be troublesome from the beginning. Updating my current machine is not something I have to do.

So my question: does anyone know/have experience with these issues? Does anyone have a machine that had these issues? Are they really fixed?

Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Thanks for your information Bleys. It makes me hopeful that when I proceed I will not be frustrated. Do you know which BIOS versin you have installed?

You have made me lean towards an Asus board since they seem to be good responding to issues such as these.

The board had the latest BIOS (2803) at build time.

I'll ask the user for whom I built the PC, if he has updated. There is a newer version (2806) for the board.

Let's see if I can get this posted before the forum craps out again.

I have a home built desktop thats used mainly as music streamer and hosting virtual machines.
In my case I have the B450 chipset rather than the B550.
I have a nvme drive installed in a Sabrent pci card and mounted in a pci slot.
I also have an addition card installed that expands my usb ports. The case only has headers for usb2 and I wanted usb3.

I dont have any issues with pci or usb dropping out. The pci nvme drive host my virtual images and is use pretty heavy.

As you can tell I''m using the 5.15 kernel.

I have a similar question, same APU but with Biostar A320MH motherboard. Bios is updated and should be supporting Ryzen 5 5600G.
Currently having ryzen 3 2200G, no issues at all in Mint 21.1 mate.
Any expiriences with this combo?

Thank you to all who responded. Your information is very much appreciated.

No one had any problems. Consequently, I have ordered all the bits and pieces [some items were out of stock] I need from my local store and they are supposed to arrive the beginning of the week. Then i will build the new machine.

Thanks again! :D

Final update on this saga.

I got a defective Asus Prime B550-Plus motherboard; it would not POST and the little idiot light on the board said there was a problem with the RAM. The friendly tech at my local store suggested that was a possibility but said it could be a few other things including the CPU. After swapping out the RAM and disconnecting the nvme drive achieved nothing, I took the CPU to the tech. It was fine. That left the motherboard and he said they had a defective Asus Prime B550-Plus motherboard a couple of days earlier. He suggested one from the Gigabyte Aorus line. When I installed it, everything worked perfectly. Yes this involved a bit or back and forth to the store to return components but it was a troubleshooting learning experience for me.

When I made my last journey to the store, the tech said that two more Asus Prime B550-Plus had been returned with exactly the same issue as I had. A bad batch he thought.

Zero problems with the USB or the PCI-E on the Gigabyte board notwithstanding that the BIOS was from April 2022 which was well before AMD issued their update in November.

This episode, combined with a friend's ASUS board failing when it was just over a year old, has really put me off ASUS boards. Their vaunted quality seems to have slipped IMHO.

Thanks again to all who responded to my original posting.

Thanks for reporting back @lostsoul. I've been thinking about getting a Ryzen APU for my next build, which would be my first AMD. Fear of the unknown etc.

Dave808,

I have used AMD CPUs for decades with no issues whatsoever. Given the very large price difference long ago, I bought a prebuilt machine with an AMD CPU and have stuck with them since then. :D

This is my first experience with an APU and it too has been 100%; I went with it for the builtin Radeon in order to avoid the Linux issues I had with Nvidia on my previous machine. Short version, the APU was seamless and the video quality maxxes out my 4k monitor.

The board I used is a a Gigabyte B550 AORUS Elite AX V2. Obviously I do not recommend the Asus Prime boards which seem to have quality issues.

So do not fear shifting to AMD!
