CUPS won't run - Google/search did not help [SOLVED]

Post by Gegenzeit »

Hi,

I've tried to install my printer (HP deskjet 4210 series)

- Downloaded the linux driver
- Started installing
- There were finve dependencies missing - I was able to get them one by one using synaptics
- I started hp-setup
- It asked for the location of the ppd file. I found it and on it went to the next step.
- It asked me for the location of the printer. I was not able to answer, so I googled.

SWITCH to hplip-gui. Nothing works. I get a message : No Installed HP Device found
If I try to klick on CUPS, I get a message: Cups not running

The same happens when I try to acces Default Printer in Administration. When accessing Printing nearly everything is greyed out.

I found some commands, but can't interpret its results:

find /etc/rc?.d -name \*cups\*
/etc/rc1.d/K80cups
/etc/rc2.d/S50cups
/etc/rc3.d/S50cups
/etc/rc4.d/S50cups
/etc/rc5.d/S50cups

cupsd
cupsd: Child exited on signal 15!

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
sudo: /etc/init.d/cupsys: command not found

That's how far I came. I guess I messed something up installing packages. Or whatever ;) Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Jörg

There is a bug in Ubuntu karmic ( where Mint8 comes from ) where cups doesn't start at boot.

For the time being use this command to start cups and see how far you can progress:

sudo service cups restart
