Problem with ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro

Post by Patobli »

First my system characteristics: AMD Athlon Double Core. 2Gbytes RAM, 160 Gbyte HDD, ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 256 MB. Linux Mint 9 main, AMD 64. Brand new install (Monitor: CRT 16 inches). It' is a desktop.

Hello everybody. I'm new with Linux Mint. Previously, I was using Ubuntu 10.04, and the problems with the configuration of the ATI card, brought me here. I did everything, googling, tweaking xorg, etc. I found that the ATI Catalyst driver doesn't work very good. It gives me a nasty flicker in my CRT monitor every time I go between FireFox tabs. Now, I get rid off the driver, and using the radeon driver. The monitor still have glitches (less frequently, but doing the exact same thing -navigating in FireFox), but I would like to eliminate them. Previous to Lucid Lynx, I had MoonOS, and I didn't have this problem. I really can't figure out what is happening. I have Compiz activated at its most basic settings.

My Xorg archive looks like this:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "fglrx"
EndSection

How can I kill the flickering? In Ubuntu Forums there are lots of solutions that didn't work for me. I'm intrigued though, with the mesa driver but I can not install because Package Manager don't find it. And I tried to install Envy, but is no longer available. What should I do? If you require more info, let me know and I will post it

Have you tried https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooti ... deonDriver?

I had success with the second set of configurations on the page with my ATi card. Until then I kept having errors with ATi Config.

I tried right after I read your answer... using the second set of instructions. Still have the same problem. I think, since I tried a lot of stuff, I will low the display resolution to 1024x768, and wait until I have money to buy a good monitor. Sorry. Thank you anyway.

Hi Folks,

I am having the same problem too however I just cannot get X to start on reboot. I have run through all the instructions here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooti ... deonDriver

I am running Mint13 Maya and installed the FGLRX drivers as they were recommended in the proprietary drivers app but when I restarted it screwed my system. Any help on this would be really appreciated as it would avoid me having to do a fresh install .

That thread response you saw above is from 3 years ago. Have you had a look at http://askubuntu.com/questions/305574/install-ati-radeon-2400-hd-pro-on-ubuntu-13-04 as it references a fix using fglrx-legacy ?

Hi TABAill,

Cheers for the info much appreciated, didn't even realise the post was that old. I tried the suggestions however I got left with a black screen and the error below:

mountall: Plymouth command failed
mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth

With a bit of googling I found the thread below and applied it to get back a graphical login.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/162346/unsolved-mystery-mountall-disconnected-from-plymouth

However now when I login if I choose cinnamon I get the Cinnamon has crashed, you are now running in fallback mode" pop-up that repops up every time I say yes but if i click no it disappears and the panel at the top goes missing. I can choose Gnome from the login screen and I can login no problem but if I choose cinnamon or cinnamon software rendering it gives me the error. I apt-get remove --purge cinnamon and reinstalled it but it made no difference. I do at least now have a graphical desktop so thanks a million TABAill - really appreciated.

Regards,

Dave

You could better open a new thread if you need any more help, you could there post the output of this command in terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Gx
