Jumpy mouse

Postby mr.magoo » Sat Jun 26, 2010 11:30 pm

Another maddening problem. Maybe I shouldn't have use the word "jumpy." It's more like the mouse pointer freezes, then jumps, freezes, etc. like the mouse ball needs a good cleaning, but this is a Logitech optical mouse. The problem is intermittent (usually when I don't want it to happen). I changed the batteries in it, but it's still there.

Stoopid computer.
Let's not talk about the operator.

Has this problem appeared all of a sudden? I'm inclined to think that this is most likely a hardware problem, if that's the case. Do you have another mouse to test if the same issues occur?

The only time my mouse becomes "jumpy" is when some rogue application suddenly
uses all my CPU cycles and there is not enough CPU power left to control
the mouse. It happens occasionally when I visit certain poorly constructed websites.
Firefox goes nuts and sometimes calms down by itself after the page loads,
and sometimes I have to intervene.

If you are able to open a terminal while it is occurring you can view what is causing
the temporary CPU spike. Just run this command.

Code: Select all

The worst offender will be at the top of the list.

Let me know what you find out.
