Sound stopped working suddently

Post by ramsforums » Sat Sep 11, 2010 11:20 pm

I am using LinuxMint (based on Ubuntu 10.04) When I installed everything was ok. I installed additional packages skype, chrome browser, flash player etc

I noticed my sound stopped working suddenly. With Google's help followed the instruction from this page

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

Nothing works. I am new to Linux and trying to learn how to use.
sudo aplay -l
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
lspci -v | less
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30c0
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at e4804000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

Anyone help me? Appreciate it.

Thanks

From your info it looks like you have an HP, as I do also. When I did the most recent updates my sound was also affected. It didn't stop working, it came from both the speakers and headphones at the same time, which it had never done. I think the update changed something in the Alsa config file.

Before you do anything really complicated, try this and see if it works. It fixed mine.

Open terminal.

Type in terminal: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Enter your password when it asks and a window will open up. That's the alsa-base conf file.
Down at the bottom and below the last entry type: snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
Click the save button at the top. When it has finished saving, close the window then exit the terminal.
Reboot.
With a little luck you'll have your sound back. You should also try running in the terminal: sudo alsamixer and make
sure none of the items is muted.
Good Luck.

Thank you

Personally, my sound problems are fixed by installing the "alsa backport modules" package in Ubuntu. You should try this first before tweaking anything :)

(this is the only reason I went back from LMDE to Ubuntu, because by sound chipset doesn't work well without it)
