Using ffmpeg to save web cam video

Post by canam101 »

I tried to use ffmpeg to save video from my web camera.

The camera works with webcamd so I know it is ok. Webcamd requires
video4linux so that must work with the web cam. And it uses
/dev/video0 so that is the web cam device name.

When I ran the command
ffmpeg -f video4linux -i /dev/video0 /tmp/out.mpg

it came back with
[video4linux @ 0x8449ac0]Wrong time base (0)
/dev/video0: Error while opening file

Any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks

Regards,
Thanks, interesting tips there. I'll bookmark it for my ffmpeg education. The camera is a logitech pro 9000.

Since I posted the question, I tried luvcview and was able to record .avi files, but ffmpeg looks like a swiss army knife for video and worth knowing something about.

Thanks for the replies.

Hi,

Great to hear that :D

I do use ffmpeg for almost every audio / video related tasks (except playing)

Anyway, can you update your post title, add [solved] to it
