it worked ok in Widows XP...

'It doesn't work' is not very informative.

Does anything happen?
Without Googling around most of us have no idea what this camera is like. Eg; Is the storage removable? Like SD card? Or perhaps a on board HD?

Thank you for a reply.
Sorry, but all i know is that Mint wont detect the video camera when plugged in through a usb port...nothing happens at all, tried other usb ports, turned the camera off / on / whilst plugged in. :) . nothing happens. He has a small cassette tape type thingy in the camera, he wants to install what he recorded to his hard drive. ( I know very little about video cameras).
Cheers.

It's an old video8 camera then.
I suspect you will get little joy with it. I know serious Linux users who can't get hardware that will work with Linux or have some hardware to that effect, as a work around, will use XP in Virtual Box.
In case you don't know, with this you can actually run XP inside Linux.

What software have you tried to use with the camera? What exact model do you have?

Open a terminal and type

tail -f /var/log/messages

Now, connect the camera and post whatever is output at the terminal.
Also do a

lsusb

And post the results.

Thank you for your help Fafla and caf4926... iv'e installed the latest virtualbox and then installed XP within, and the video camera still wasn't recognized with the usb ports but a bit of googling research fixed that.
Thank you again, case solved :)
