Hard drive swap?

Post by Losgann »

Hey guys,

Quick question, possibly a dumb one, but I've never done this before. If I take the HDD out of one machine and put it into another, will it boot? I.e. will Mint be able to detect the new hardware, or will I have to do a clean re-install of Mint 10 once I've got the HDD in the new computer?

Thanks!

I have done this previously with no issues. However, if one drive has installed proprietary video drivers, it may or may not work with the other machine. If you are using open-source video drivers, there should not be a problem. If you have a video refresh/resolution such as 75Hz and the other monitor can only see 60Hz, you may wish to verify/adjust that before swapping. Those are the first things I can thing of.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3
