[SOLVED] No Sound on fresh install

Post by Reljoy »

My motherboard died so I upgraded. Reinstalled Mint 10. Now I have no sound at all.
My question is - should I change the motherboard to something else or can this be fixed?

I do not see your model listed (ALC887) http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation ... Models.txt

But there is a LOT of discussion/direction on how to edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to match the make and/or model of the machine http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1043568

Basically all you do is add

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL
to the end of the alsa-base.conf file with YOUR model cross referenced in place of capitalized MODEL in that statement. For my HP Touchsmart I have to use options snd-hda-intel model=touchsmart, for example.

Note: if this works you may want to # out the line that was in use previously that didn't work.

I added that line as you suggested and referred to the url you gave me.
options snd-hda-intel model=ALC887
I don't think it worked at all.

Model should not be the chipset model, as you posted above. Instead, the file I linked to http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation ... Models.txt shows all the model names in the left column you can try and to the right of them is a bit of info on them. Replace MODEL with whatever matches your machine or appears to come closest.

Could also try model=basic as well.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte MA78LMT-S2
The sound is Realtek ALC888B codec
I still have not got sound. I must be doing something wrong.
My alsa-base.conf file is

Code: Select all

I think the problem is you are using the CHIPSET model. If you look at the link I provided both times there are models of computers (like Toshiba, Touchsmart, etc.

auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)
So instead of =ALC888 as your states, try them one by one as =acer or =targa or whatever. Trial and error, but you need to follow the instructions I provided and use the links. There won't be a magic one that I can point you to because it's just a motherboard and not a name brand computer so you'll likely have to do this over and over till you work through the list and get one that works. And try =basic as well in the last line of alsa-base.conf.

Example - the first line above for that chipset is
3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O
So what you do is take the part on the left (3stack-dig) and replace MODEL with 3stack-dig as follows:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

Re: No Sound on fresh install

Finally I understand!!!
Thank you.
I have tried the first 5, rebooting between them. Still no sound.
Is there a way that I don't have to reboot each time?
thanks again.
Edit:
Thought I understood - but I was putting all of the line, not just the first part.
I have sound working - but not working properly. It sometimes starts and stops. I am playing a music track from my hard drive.
I'm using
options snd-hda-intel model=targa

I have sound working (after a fashion) but it is not fixed properly yet.
Any idea why I get this?
rperrett@Reljoy-Mint ~ $ pulseaudio -D
E: main.c: Daemon startup failed.

and

rperrett@Reljoy-Mint ~ $ gnome-alsamixer

[SOLVED] No Sound on fresh install

Post by Reljoy »

I replaced my motherboard to a
Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H
and the sound worked perfectly when I installed Mint10.
