USB WiFi Antenna for Linux/Linux Mint

Post by SyntheticShield »

I have been looking at purchasing a high gain USB WiFi antenna that will work in Linux or specifically Linux Mint. I just bought a Dell Inspiron 11z that had Linux Mint promptly installed on it and is working fabulously. However, I am sometimes in areas where I can barely get a WiFi signal and are usually too weak for a reliable connection. I would like to use a high gain wifi antenna to help with that. However I want to make sure I get one that will work in Linux. I pretty much ditched Windows and am running Linux nearly exclusively. The only thing I run Windows for now (and its through VirtualBox) is for my automotive tuning software and for my Neat Receipts scanner). So I want to be as sure as possible that any antenna I get will be compatible with and work in Linux Mint.

So I thought I would post up here and get suggestions from the community. Is there anyone out there running a high gain USB WiFi antenna? If so, what have been your experiences with it and how hard was it to get to work in Mint? Ive seen a few that say they work with Linux but only to read a few reviews in which you have to compile the driver yourself, which is not a strong point for me.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sleven, thank you for your reply. Any of those would meet my needs, well except the 2000mW one, I would have concerns it would absolutely fry my usb port. However, I know for a fact the Alfa models you have to compile the driver for linux. Ive seen mixed reviews over it as well. I would venture to say that any of the others would also require compiling the driver then as the information I read on a few different models seem to indicate that.

So my question would then become is it hard to compile something like that and then make it installable or workable for Linux Mint? Ive been trying to learn more about that sort of thing but Im just not there yet.
