How to install Canon MX860 printer and scanner drivers in Linux Mint 11 Katya and Linux Mint 10 Julia amd64 x64 bit

Install the ia32-libs shared libraries (for amd64 and ia64 systems):
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
or
Install ia32-libs from Synaptic Package Manager.

Download Canon MX860 32bit Linux drivers from Canon-Europe.com
http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Con ... oad&page=1

As of June 5, 2011 the available driver versions are:
Printer Driver for Debian Linux File version: 3.1 - cnijfilter-mx860series-3.10-1-i386-deb.tar.gz
ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) File version: 1.3 - scangearmp-mx860series-1.30-1-i386-deb.tar.gz

Extract both tar.gz files

cd cnijfilter-mx860series-3.10-1-i386-deb/packages
sudo dpkg -iG --force-architecture cnijfilter-*

cd scangearmp-mx860series-1.30-1-i386-deb/packages
sudo dpkg -iG --force-architecture scangearmp-*

## sudo = run as superuser
## dpkg = debian package manager
## -i = install
## -G = skip old packages
## --force-architecture = ignore error regarding installing i386 package on amd64 system

OK, I followed these instructions until it said "Run: Printing/Configure Printer" etc. How do I do that? I have a Brother printer printing wirelessly that I set up through CUPS, but I don't know how to configure my Canon MX860. Whatever I try, CUP says the printer is busy or waiting or whatever.

How can I diagnose the problem? And how can I "Run: Printing/Configure Printer"??
