Re: best computers for linux install
While IBM is a contributor and supporter of Linux, like most other desktop vendors, IBM used components from other manufacturers in its desktops. Those components, like graphics cards and wireless chips, may or may not have good support on Linux.
If your friend is considering various models, we can give some opinions whether those models would run fine with Linux or not. Please share a link to the webpage for each model, so we can have a look at the specifications and such.
And I'm assuming this will be a pre-owned (used) or refurbished desktop?

For desktops, it is usually easy, just pick a good graphics card, eg Nvidia or Ati, and check the motherboard or device specs to see how Linux might install (Internet search)..
Either look at Linux vendors seeing what hardware they are using, eg Emporer linux

http://www.emperorlinux.com/mfgr/
http://linuxpreloaded.com/
Or find a general site with user install experiences or just search on the computer brand/model number + Linux to see if there have been any problems with the installations..

- These days, it will tend to be mobile (notebook) computers that are being emphasized, but as long as the hardware is similar; apart from on-board graphics, your should be able to find a relatively informed opinion of Linux with that machine..
