is there a way to turn off mouse post in laptop keyboard

Post by omegaman »

title pretty much says it all. Dell D800 running Mint Julia without issue. But now, and I know this is probably a hardware issue, when I type the mouse floats down and to the left adn off the screen. the keyboard pointer barely controls it. On my wife's dell laptop I downloaded a dell app where I could disable that pointer control and only use the touchpad. I checked in control panel and can't find a way to disable that pointer control, only speed and sensitivity. I've blown the keyboard clear, removed the (what is the name of this thing in the keyboard? I'm drawing a blank!) colored cover off, there is nothing stuck inside. Sometimes when I use that, instead of floating off screen left and bottom, it goes off right and top.

Incredibly frustrating, as sometimes it will actually click... and take me away from what I am working on.

ideas?

Nipple, I think, is one word used for the ultra-annoying joystick in the middle of the keyboard. But it's a bit rude so I use nurple, too.

Anyway the synaptics driver controls touchpad and joystick (I think it does both, anyway). Move the driver out of xorg's recognition and it won't work any more. On my box this would do the trick

Code: Select all

mv /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.bck
The reason for renaming it is so you can always reinstate it if you need to by reversing the operation.

correct me if I'm wrong but that will disable both joystick and touchpad right? I want to keep the touchpad operational.

tried disabling it in BIOS, but that only works if I plug in a serial or ps2 mouse, not the usb wireless I have...I think I may have to do a trackstickectomy.

Well, instead of opening it up and snipping a cable, I set it to serial mouse in BIOS, so the touchpad is also disabled and I have to use the USB wireless mouse, but at least my rage has subsided..lol
