Damned hardware!

Post by chiefjim »

I'm working on a laptop that prefers to lock up tight when logging on:

Acer Aspire 5250-BZ467
AMD Radeon HD 6320
AMD E-450
4 GB sysem memory

This happens with Mint-9, 10, 11, 12.

I'm guessing this is a hardware issue inside the kernel. Is there a fix? Hate to return this laptop to the owner saying "sorry it works only with Windows"

the correct driver for the ati6***m is AMD Catalyst™ 11.11 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Drive this should be in the repository. but there is a conflict between ati and mint 12, it should work in other flavors...

Can't get there from here. Can't boot long enough to login.

Can you get into Safe graphic ( compatibility mode?)? from either live cd/dvd or installed OS?

Once you can get into safe mode, you can test install fglrx driver, and see if it runs well on your hardware.

I used this method and it works on a few debian based distros

This problem seems to be well known around the various Linux distributions. Based on recommendations I have already flashed to the latest BIOS revision. One other says "The lockup is a known long-time-and-still-not-solved kernel bug with Nvidia graphic cards. Try using the "nolapic_timer" boot option."

How is that done? Near rookie in that function.

At the grub boot menu hit the spacebar so you have time to read the bottom line, it tells you which key to hit so you can enter boot options.
When you get there just enter nolapic_timer and hit enter.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the Grub installed doesn't recognise that command.

Back to square one!
