Mounting 2TB Seagate USB drive in LM18

Post by ZenPath »

Hi Board
On previous versions of Mint, my Seagate USB external HDD would just automatically be mounted whenever I booted my machine.
Following my new machine and upgrade to LM18 this is not the case. I cannot find it under /media and my dmesg output is:

Code: Select all

So obviously my system is finding the drive. However, it is not being mounted.

I am able to (auto)mount usb pen drives easily and they show up on my desktop, but the 2TB drive (which has my back up info and other files I use) does not.
Some system specs:
Processor : 8x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz
Memory : 65877MB (2768MB used)
Operating System : Linux Mint 18 Sarah
OpenGL Renderer : Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)

Any ideas/ suggestions?
Thanks

Is the 1TB drive (sdb) the one you want mounted, or a different one? Did you have the USB Seagate connected?

Hi there
The 2TB Seagate is connected and is the one I want mounted. The light is on, the USB is plugged in, but there's just no actual mounting.

Any thoughts on this?

The 2TB did not show up in the result of lsblk.
What does this show?

lsusb shows:

Code: Select all

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 05e3:0732 Genesys Logic, Inc. All-in-One Cardreader
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 097: ID 0bc2:3312 Seagate RSS LLC SRD00F2 Expansion Desktop Drive (STBV)
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 03f0:1d17 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1320
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Also HardInfo lists it as a SCSI device, so it is evidently there.

I've noticed a couple of other things too. First, the machine hangs at boot time if the Seagate is plugged in with a "drm: i915_gem_init_stolen" message and after hanging like that for several moments it will resume boot up only once I unplug the Seagate. I see from some bug reports that this error message is usually to do with a kernel error, but has apparently been fixed for a while now.

Running TestDisk the USB drive is listed at /dev/sda/ yet when I ran sudo lsblk -o model, name, size, fstype, label, uuid, mountpoint as you suggested, another partition was listed as /dev/sda so I wonder if there is a conflict here in terms of how the drive is recognised by the system? Is that also what's throwing up the boot error?

Finally, thinking that a reinstall with the drive plugged in might help it get properly mapped in fstab, I inserted a Mint 18 install disk and could not advance past the language selection again, unless I disconnected the Seagate.

So I'm stuck. Any further thoughts?

Can you try the Seagate on a different computer? It does sound like a hardware problem with the drive.
It should be connected to USB 3.0, if it is a 3.0 drive.

Re: Mounting 2TB Seagate USB drive in LM18

Thanks for the staying the course on this.

An update on this and a further query.
I have now plugged the drive (and done so using different USB connection cables) into 2 different LM18 boxes, 1 LM17.3 laptop , Win XP and Win 7 laptops. The two Windows laptops didn't pick it up. On the two LM18 boxes and the 17.3 laptop, running dmesg showed that the USB was bring recognised by the system - the output of dmesg correctly identified the type of drive, the vendor, and even went so far as to claim to be spinning up the disk. It allocated it to sdg so I tried to manually mount this to both /media and to /mnt as both root and ordinary user and with and without ntfs-3g flags on the mount command. Still nada.

So, in light of all this, I remain hopeful that the drive itself may be having a problem being mounted - it is being 'seen' by the OS, but just cannot make the 'jump' from having the disks spun up to being mounted.

Here then is the query. if the problem is mounting it (rather than a corrupt disk) is there any value in trying to use a caddy? So the next query is, if this sounds like a viable next step, what would I be looking for? Would it be a caddy that I need to disassemble the USB drive casing, insert the drive into the caddy and then try to mount the drive plus caddy using a USB cable or is there some other - better - arrangement I could try? My objective at this point is to try to recover the data from that drive, transfer it onto a second (and a third) expansion drive, and I was thinking that the use of a caddy might facilitate this.

Any thoughts?

Please provide the model number of the Seagate, plus any other identifying info.
The first thing I would try is a SATA to USB converter cable.

Sure.

2 TB Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive PIN: 1D7AD6-500; S/N: NA4MJ0JH

Print out from dmesg:

Having just plugged it back in, the drive was making a soft kind of high pitched whirring sound for about a couple of minutes but has now gone quiet. I hope all of this un/plugging hasn't screwed with the drive integrity.

BTW, why do you suggest a SATA to USB converter cable, and is this the kind of thing you had in mind (I'm in the UK): http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/idesata-to-usb-20-a35fq?
Thanks again

Re: Mounting 2TB Seagate USB drive in LM18

It was just a thought, to try something different. If the drive itself has failed, no cable will help.
There is a possibility that the case or case/USB connections are bad. Inside the case, the drive probably has a SATA connection to the case. If that is true, you could extract the drive and connect it to a SATA port in a desktop (install it). That would eliminate the possibilities of problems with those case connections.

Thanks again.
I wasn't aware that inside the case it would have a SATA connection. I will buy one from the link I shared and open the case. It would be more convenient to run it via a USB, so I'll go for that option if possible.
With a bit (a lot?) of luck, I'll be able to access my files and can transfer onto a couple of new external drives for safe keeping.
Thanks for your help. Any other thoughts/ advice before I commit to this?

I am going by the way hard drive enclosures are sold
https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Hard-Drive ... _pd_bsnr_1
They accept any SATA hard drive.
You don't have to buy anything to install the hard drive in a desktop - you just need a normal SATA cable. (That is from my perspective... I have several of those lying around.)

I see now.

This would then be used once I've cracked the plastic Seagate case to retrieve the drive, then just insert the exposed drive into the enclosure? Is the SATA connection on the inside of the enclosure (I can't see any images of the internals)?

My suggestion was not to install the hard drive in a different enclosure, but to install the hard drive internally in a desktop, in the normal way that any hard drive is installed.
When you say "crack open" the Seagate enclosure, I hope that there are screws to disassemble it without physical damage. I would hate to suggest that someone damage their hardware.

I would hate to suggest that someone damage their hardware.
No worries - I was using the word loosely. There are a number of on-line vids that suggest ways of opening up a Seagate drive case not all of which involve the use of a sledgehammer :)

I think that I will use the enclosure as an external drive for convenience, and looking at the above videos, it does look like the drive inside the casing is a SATA connection, so that should work or eliminate the possibility that it is a damage to the case SATA to USB connection that's at fault.

After having spent the better part of two days on this issue, I just cannot find a viable resolution to the problem of why the drive just does not mount or get beyond the superficial level recognition by the system as reflected in the dmesg and lsusb output logs. So, at the end of my own knowledge of these things, and your own help notwithstanding, searching the web has shown contradictory, incomplete and/ or non-functioning workarounds, so life's too short - time to change my approach to this issue and see if I can leverage some response from the drive via an alternative method, especially since the common denominator is the device itself.

So thanks again for your input. If you have any other bright ideas, do please share 'em. I'll place an order for one of those enclosures some time over the next few days and then take the leap.

All the best

Hi all,
I have a similar problem with my seagate 2T external HD. In my case, it will mount once a few months, randomly it seems. "Dmesg" gives:

Any ideas?
