ntfs-3g on an external drive
Thought I'd save myself headaches by partitioning my USB hard drive, but it turns out GParted wants ntfs-3g installed. My questions: What can I do without it? And technically, wouldn't I need Linux on said drive in order to install the package? Thank you for your help.

Re: ntfs-3g on an external drive
Ntfs-3g is the filesystem driver of choice for using ntfs filesystems. Without it, I don't think you can do anything but read existing ntfs filesystems, and maybe
not even that. That software does not go on the disk you are formatting/reading/writing to, it is part of your Linux operating system. You do not need it
if you are only dealing with other filesystems, such as the ones Linux uses by default (ext2, -3, and -4 most commonly), FAT32, UDF on optical disks, and many others.
