Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Hi there! I've been gradually migrating my computers away from Windows to Mint and enjoying hitting minor roadblocks and troubleshooting them along the way but this is the first issue I've encountered that I seem unable to resolve
I have a dual boot Win 8.1/Mint 18.2 computer with two Windows partitions encrypted with Bitlocker and the Mint root and swap partitions encrypted with luks - Mint recognises the first partition as a Bitlocker one but the second partition is listed as an unknown format (it works fine and reports no errors in Windows).
The bigger problem though is that whenever I do something like a kernal or grub update it takes *ages* with Mint reporting hundreds of read/write errors as it attempts to do something with that unrecognised Bitlocker drive. Turning Bitlocker off on that second partition makes Mint see it as NTFS and all the errors go away.
I've been looking for a way to just get Mint to ignore the partition altogether but I've been unsuccessful in finding anything that works. Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!

Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Do you have that partition listed in /etc/fstab ?.
If so comment it out or remove it entirely.
No comment on the other issue as I've never looked at bitlocker.

I have a feeling it's the /boot/efi partition since it happens with a kernal or grub updatesyg00 wrote:Do you have that partition listed in /etc/fstab ?.

@AegisPrime
Can you paste back the output of
blkid
and mount
Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Hello there!
I can't post any output right now since the SSD I'm setting up for this PC has been removed whilst I backup and transition some of my Windows software across (lots of applications that need to be unregistered on the old install and re-registered on the new one).
I've run blkid a few times whilst trying to diagnose this though and from memory the layout looks something like this:
sda1: NTFS, System Reserved (unencrypted, Windows primary partition)
sda2: NTFS, 'System' partition (Bitlocker, Windows primary partition)
sda3: NTFS 'Applications' partition (Bitlocker, Windows primary partition)
sda4: 'Extended' partition containing:
sda5: ext4 /boot (unencrypted, Linux Mint logical partition)
sda6: ext4 / (luks encrypted, Linux Mint logical partition in a group called 'crypt_group')
sda7: swap (luks encrypted, Linux Mint logical partition in a group called 'crypt_group')
There's no EFI partition since this is an older X58-based i7 PC that predates it. Sorry I can't give a better answer right now but as soon as I get a minute to swap the drive back in I'll get that output for you - thanks!

Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Is /dev/disk/by-uuid/2606BBC306BB9273 /mnt/2606BBC306BB9273 auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,noauto 0 0 the partition in question
I don't see /dev/sda3 referenced anywhere. If you comment that line in fstab do you still get the errors

Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Hiya! Yes, that entry is for sda3 - I think it got added when I used the Disks utility to hide/not mount the unencrypted version of that drive. I tried commenting that line out but it didn't make any difference - if Bitlocker's turned on for that drive I get the read/write errors seen above.

Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
See the screengrab of Gparted - "input/output error during read on /dev/sda"WharfRat wrote:Can you past a few lines of the errors
I get the same error hundreds of times when updating grub or the kernal
Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
I think I know what's causing the errors, but not what to do about it.
Grub writes the start location of the partition containing the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to the mbr. It's not a file name stored someplace.
If you were to move the linux partition or resize it with gparted from the left (start of the partition) it would no longer be able to boot.
I'm not a grub expert, but it seems the update procedure is attempting to access the mbr, errors being input/output error during read on /dev/sda, not a partition e.g., sda3 or sda2.
I have no clue how bitlocker works or how it does what it does so I'm at a total loss here.

Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Is there perhaps a way to get Mint to completely ignore the problem partition?

If there is it's above my pay grade.AegisPrime wrote:Is there perhaps a way to get Mint to completely ignore the problem partition?
It's reporting errors for /dev/sda which is a block device not a partition.
Re: Weird Windows partition/Bitlocker problem
Hmm - for now I'll have to run that partition unencrypted.
Here's the output of sudo update-grub btw (not very helpful!):
