[SOLVED] Kernel panic when attempting to plug in external hard disk

Post by suburbGira »

Somehow, I have managed to mess up my laptop and Seagate Expansion Drive 2TB so badly that my laptop kernel panics every time I plug in the drive (source: caps lock light). I have some stuff on there i don't want to lose like 5 virtual machines, including my Windows Server 2003 VM. (I have tried the drive in two Windows 10 laptops, one saw it as unmountable and the other ignored it). Oh and if it helps, I'm running Mint 18.1 'Serena' with kernel 4.4.0-21-generic on a Toshiba Satellite Pro A40 with a 2.8 GHz singlecore Intel Celeron and 1.2 GB of RAM. (And no swap because I really can't spare any space out of my 40GB hard disk, yes 40 forty). Can someone help? (I really wasn't sure whether to put this this Hardware or Mounting Partitions)

Since 2 other machines haven't read the drive the problem seems to be with the Seagate drive.
