Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
On my Dell laptop, /Backup is setup as a partition and Timeshift is using it, but I do not have ownership of it and therefore can't see that partition in Nemo.
Timeshift Location
Time using it
fstab looks like this, why do I not have ownership of the partition?

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
$ ls -lhd /backup
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4.0K Jun 5 21:08 /backup
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4.0K Jun 5 21:08 /backup
Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
You can fix that with
sudo chown $USER:$USER /backup

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
$ ls -lhd /backup
drwxr-xr-x 4 john john 4.0K Jun 5 21:08 /backup
Still not showing in Nemo, so I presume that does not take effect until the next reboot?
which I will do now.

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
The option
Edit: I think, I misunderstood the difference between a partition being mounted by root and the mount point being owned by root.
defaults
is equivalent to rw, suid, dev, exec, auto, nouser
, async (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab)- sync/async - All I/O to the file system should be done (a)synchronously.
- auto - The filesystem can be mounted automatically (at bootup, or when mount is passed the -a option). This is really unnecessary as this is the default action of mount -a anyway.
- noauto - The filesystem will NOT be automatically mounted at startup, or when mount passed -a. You must explicitly mount the filesystem.
- dev/nodev - Interpret/Do not interpret character or block special devices on the file system.
- exec / noexec - Permit/Prevent the execution of binaries from the filesystem.
- suid/nosuid - Permit/Block the operation of suid, and sgid bits.
- ro - Mount read-only.
- rw - Mount read-write.
- user - Permit any user to mount the filesystem. This automatically implies noexec, nosuid, nodev unless overridden.
nouser - Only permit root to mount the filesystem
. This is also a default setting.
nouser
the culprit here.Edit: I think, I misunderstood the difference between a partition being mounted by root and the mount point being owned by root.

Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

AZgl1500,

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
Disks says that it is, Timeshift is using it for backups, so I have to assume that it is mounted,
and
So, I am now 500 miles from home, had a while to think on this, and now believe that it somehow did not get mounted to
this is a copy of the previous fstab image I made earlier.
and
Code: Select all
$ mount|grep ^/dev/sda3
/dev/sda3 on /backup type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)
/mnt

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
By "not showing up in Nemo" you mean it's not showing up on the side panel of nemo.
That is because your mount point is not under /media or your home directory. This is by design.
You can either:
[1] Change your mount point to /media/backup
[2] Add the silly x-gvfs-show option to your fstab line:
[3] Or just bookmark the damn thing.
Open /backup in nemo ( open a terminal and run

Re: Don't have ownership of partition /Backup
Thanks for that help.
I am on vacation in Colorado Springs now, and that Dell laptop's power supply just burned up to a crisp....
so, it is stuffed in a closet until I find a new power pack somewhere up here in the piney woods.
I am now using a very old 32bit painfully slow ACER with Mate on it, I hate Mate, nothing is where it belongs
Power Settings totally ignore what I set them to... the display keeps dimming down to nothing in 1 minutes flat, even though I set it to 'never'.
Cinnamon rules the roost.
The ASUS was my nice daily driver, 12 gB RAM and all, fast! 10 seconds to the desktop and ready to go.
then it just fried itself.
and now, the Dell's power supply burns up... that happened at a KOA campsite, and I am not sure that the electric power there was not the cause of that problem??? dunno,
and now, on this old ACER Aspire, which I hauled along "just in case", it won't be needed, right?
well, it is, and glad to have it for tonight.
