Bootable USB with new HDD fail

Post by conwacj1 »

Hey all...

I have a Toshiba Satellite that died several years ago that I"m trying to resurrect. Its ridden with a virus, so I was able to boot linux mint from a USB to get all my needed old pics, etc. I'm ready to install Iinux mint from desktop app, but it keeps failing. First time I got the click of death from my old harddrive, so I bought a new HDD. Now I'm getting the 'apt-get install failure' It seems I have a new Drive partition error, but I"m stuck on how to fix before proceeding. Seems noone has tried to install to linux mint from USB with a new HDD. What do I need to do to get the HDD right before trying to install to LM?

Here are specs:

mint@mint ~ $ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/loop0: 1.7 GiB, 1837953024 bytes, 3589752 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk /dev/sda: 232.9 GiB, 250059350016 bytes, 488397168 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x1850e3e9

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sda1 2048 480190463 480188416 229G 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 480192510 488396799 8204290 3.9G 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 480192512 488396799 8204288 3.9G 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary.

Disk /dev/sdb: 7.9 GiB, 8451522560 bytes, 16506880 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

How are you trying to do the installation? Generally, if you just let the installer do its thing, it'll make things work.

That doesn't seem to be the case, many people have in fact tried that and succeeded.

I only recently did just that. My procedure is to boot into the live environment first and then opt to install from there. Have you logged on to your network?
