Thunar does not show a particular disk partition [solved by re-installation]

Post by billpry » Thu Apr 18, 2019 3:49 am

Thunar file display does not display 2nd partition of a particular usb drive. <Solved>

Linux mint tessa 19.1 64 bit with xfce; Thunar version 1.6.15

Thunar does not display 2nd disk partition of my usb wd disk (1 tb) named WD_Timeshift, 2 partitions on disk, ntfs and ext4, unused 1 mb at end.

It does display the 2 partitions of my seagate usb disk (500 gb), 2 partitions on disk, ntfs and ext4, unused 2 mb at end.

Command df displays the 2nd wd partition (WD Timeshift) as well as all the other partitions.

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdc2 502915304 15992652 461306320 4% /media/bill/WD_Timeshift
/dev/sdc1 464728060 23588048 441140012 6% /media/bill/WD_Files
/dev/sdd1 244234320 231772 244002548 1% /media/bill/SG_Backup
/dev/sdd2 240186804 47664220 180298744 21% /media/bill/SG_Timeshift

Timeshift uses the 2nd wd partition without any problem.

Made an entry for the 2nd wd partition (WD Timeshift) in /etc/fstab; no change in Thunar behavior.

Executed mount -a, no change in Thunar behavior.

Log out and in many times; Unplugged and replugged drive many times; Reboot many times.

Now here is the workaround!: if I open Gparted (partition manager), Thunar now lists the partition! If I then close Gparted Thunar again does not list the partition.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. What in the world would Gparted do to cause Thunar to list that partition?

NEW INFO: command "parted" shows that the partition that displays has "partition table msdos" and the partition that does not display has "partition table gpt"

New INFO (4/20): if I open Thunar (file manager) as "root", the partition is displayed!!

Here is the directory listing for /media
drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4096 Apr 20 06:52 SG_Files
drwxrwxrwx 4 root root 4096 Apr 9 18:06 SG_Timeshift
drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4096 Apr 19 16:14 WD_Files
drwxrwxrwx 4 root root 4096 Apr 16 09:22 WD_Timeshift

some partitions Linux makes are hidden but can be viewed with Gnome Disk Utility or GParted

Thank you for your response.

Yes, there are several ways to display the partition. It is not marked as "hidden"

Among the ways to display the partition, application gparted and the command df.

My question concerns the issue that Thunar file manager does NOT list the partition.

However, strangely, if I open application gparted, Thunar DOES list the partition in the left panel. Closing gparted causes the Thunar entry for that partition to disappear from the left panel.

System crash, rebuilt from scratch.

Thunar lists all partitions.
