[SOLVED] Mint 20.2 new install on SSD cannot find HDD

Post by plantkeeper »

Hello all!

Just installed Mint 20.2 (64-bit, Cinnamon) on a new Asus VivoBook X513. It has both a SSD (256 GB) and HDD (1 TB). Mint is on the SSD and is working fine, except it cannot talk to the HDD and doesn't recognize it as a disk. The 1 TB HDD doesn't appear anywhere in Linux at all, not even as an unmounted drive.

Note: there is nothing on the hard drive I could possibly want to save, I just want the space.

Info about the hard drive (from Asus UEFI):
Serial ATA Port 0
Device Type: hard disk (931.5 GB)
Model Name: ST1000M035-1RK172
Status: Non-RAID
Controller Type: AHCI
Controller Interface: SATA
I've read that if this disk is configured as RAID, that can cause this same problem, but that doesn't seem to be the issue here.

During the brief period that Windows existed on this machine, I could see this drive there. I installed Mint on the whole disk using defaults... lesson learned on just figuring things are fine because they were fine before, I guess.

Another note: I am booting with "nomodeset" as a linux parameter in grub. Otherwise I get no GUI.

Things I have tried:
  • Booting with irqpoll as a linux parameter in grub
  • Disabling secure boot in Asus UEFI
  • Disabling fast boot in Asus UEFI
  • Updating everything in Mint

Output of fdisk -l:

Code: Select all

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
This seems to correspond to the SSD.

That's not going to be helpful. Your CPU is far too new for that old LTS kernel. Go into update manager. On the View menu, select Linux Kernels and install the latest 5.11 then reboot. Also double-check in UEFI/BIOS that RAID is definitely set to AHCI.

Well, that did it. Installed the latest 5.11 kernel, restarted, and the drive is now there.

fdisk -l says:
