LM 20.2 Xfce cannot burn data DVD

Post by rattkjelke »

I'm running Linux Mint 20.2 Xfce.
I need to burn some files on a DVD for somebody. I haven't tried it before on this computer.

I installed xfburn. When I tried to burn the DVD xfburn gives a "Failure" and a popup window with "The write mode is not supported currently."

Here is the DVD drive inxi info:

Code: Select all

Drives: Optical-1: /dev/sr0 vendor: hp HLDS model: DVDRW GUD1N rev: LD04
           dev-links: cdrom,cdrw,dvd,dvdrw
Features: speed: 62 multisession: yes audio: yes dvd: yes rw: cd-r,cd-rw,dvd-r,dvd-ram
           state: running
It appears to be writeable.

If I right click and look at the properties of the blank DVD desktop icon, the name is "CD/DVD Creator" and on the permissions tab the owner and group is "root (root)".

I tried running xfburn as root and got the same errors.
I can't find a way to change permission for my normal user account to write to it.
My user is already by default a member of "cdrom" group and user privileges "Use CD-ROM drives'".
How can I troubleshoot this and fix it?

I booted from a MX Linux live USB and was able to write to the DVD with Xfburn (which comes installed on MX) so it's not a hardware problem.

Good question.
Let's try to see something.

Post the command output:
Inxi -Sdx

Post figure of Xfburn, as an example.

Well I don't know what happened but today it works.
I can drag & drop the files to Xfburn, press the burn button and get this window...

Yesterday the Speed and Write mode dropdown lists were empty and disabled, as above, and the refresh button did not do anything.

Today the dropdown lists are still disabled at first but now the refresh button works and populates the dropdown lists, as below. After that I can burn with no problem. I don't know what changed. I don't think I did anything different.

When booting the same PC from a MX Linux 19.4 persistent live USB the dropdown lists are auto populated without doing anything. Maybe the versions of Xfburn are different. I didn't check that. I don't remember ever having to refresh anything in the past. I used to use Xfburn all the time but that was years ago.

Perhaps "Xfburn" or even Xfce 4.16 momentarily did not recognize the target device.
It was necessary to give it a little push.
