[SOLVED] Is my HDD dying?

Post by Coros »

I recently switched to mint and after a couple of days of using it, I was getting a “error: can’t read outside hd0” message followed by a kernel panic on my Dell Inspiron n411z and sometimes it would just poweroff by itself when I was using a resource heavy application. So I decided reinstalling it. Unfortunately the problem still persisted, sometimes it boots and sometimes it doesn’t . I was just wondering if it was my hard drive or something else.

Hi Coros ,
welcome to our forum.
:)

if you can get the machine to Boot up Normally,
then do this:
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=318644
copy the result of that, back here, on your reply.

whilst you are there, then goto
- Menu - Accessories - Disks
click on the three vertical dots, then on Smart Data & Self Tests.
grab an screen_shot of that screen, and post it back here, on your reply.

if you can't do any of that, then are there any errors, that you can report on :?:

It says that the disk is ok. But you got a lot of bad sectors mostly read errors. It might be a problem as you said you had issues with it. Like when you do heavy task it gives a kernel panic. I would suggest to back up and keep an eye on the smart data if it starts to increase rapidly then it's bad news. Maybe the heavy tasks you were doing was corrupted. I would suggest to change the drive.

You could do a bad block command but it wil take longer to do so a disk surface scan. I personally would change the drive as it's 700 bad sectors or more. But it's up to you. It could also be caused by other hardware though.

Thanks for the reply!
Yes it was my hard drive, I recently changed it and I don't seem to have any problems any more.
