Firmware updates for Western Digital SSD hard drives
Are firmware updates for Western Digital (and other brands) of SSD hard drives included in update manager updates from the Linux Mint servers or is this something that needs to be obtained from Western Digital and then installed by the Linux Mint user ?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Firmware updates for Western Digital SSD hard drives
It seems that the firmware updates for WD SSD would have to be done in Windows using WD Dashboard app.

So if I have to "purchase" Windows to do this, then what is the point in using Linux ?gittiest personITW wrote: ⤴Fri Oct 22, 2021 5:28 pm It seems that the firmware updates for WD SSD would have to be done in Windows using WD Dashboard app.

Re: Firmware updates for Western Digital SSD hard drives
You don't have to purchase windows.
If you have a dual boot or, yes, I know it is a palaver, connect the drive to a Windows machine, or, possibly using Live Windows might do it (or it might turn your ssd into a paperweight - dyor).
Unfortunately, this is something that you might want to take up with WD as they are the ones who limit their firmware upgrades.
Some other SSD manufacturers/brands provide the user to be able to upgrade with a bootable iso.
WD's loss is Samsung's gain.
However, it is 50:50 whether you actually need to do most firmware updates. I personally might do when next installing an OS but then again, might not. I'll do a search to see if there is any realtime benefit to doing it when the time comes.

I already did take it up with WD and their take was (like much of the rest of the world) if you don't use Windows then you are just SOL.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Sounds like a good reason not to buy WD, another one is the last one I got was DOA.

Wrong question. I would ask why buy hardware that fails to work with Linux.

As hardware needs replacing, people will do that.
Can see plenty of posts "Will xxxxxxxxx work with Linux?".
The answer is almost always YES.
However,
Maybe from hereon it is worth looking harder into the question above but answering the one below:
"Can xxxxxxxxx be updated if not using MS?"
For instance, various mice need to be configured within Windows, some motherboards need Windows to update BIOS or configure some actions (like LEDs), as well as, it seems, WD ssd

They do have a forum, and a quick search seems to reveal the same, but I didn't look long.wpshooter wrote: I already did take it up with WD and their take was (like much of the rest of the world) if you don't use Windows then you are just SOL.

My guess is that the average Linux user is not going to know this and not too many are going to research what might and might not be compatible and doubt that you could find a legit answer even if you did.
