Missing 2nd drive

Post by leeston »

Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon
Cinnamon: 5.0.7
Kernal: 5.4.0-91-generic

I have 2 drives - 1 SSD (250GB) & 1 HDD (2gb)

Was running the above on my desktop and the OS crashed on me and ended up in a loop of doom (first time on 10 years !) - Previously, I could access my second drive (HDD) via the "files" program quite happily.

Did a full re-install to fix the OS issue. Got second drive to appear on the desktop as an icon and can access the files however I can't access this drive via the File's program (It does not appear as a recognised drive). Can you please kindly help me with how to update my system to recognise the second drive in the files application?

Did the usual Googling but nothing found that fixed the problem.

Many thanks in anticipation of some help :D

1st. = Are you sure that is a hard drive and not a thumb drive? 2GB for a hdd means that drive MUST be ide only. If that is the case, I'm thinking I should applaud you for taking such great care of a very old piece of storage tech. :D I've NEVER see a sata based hard drive with a capacity lower than at least 10GBs, but that doesn't mean a smaller capacity for sata hdd's doesn't exist.

2nd. = Please post the results of the following terminal command so we can see how your system sees and deals with your hardware. This is involving Step 5 on How To Get Help link where it says above this window " Before you post please read this " where " this " is the underlined link. :)

inxi -Fxxxrz

1. You can left click drag to highlight that command from here, right click and select " copy " ( or hold ctrl and press c ),
2. Launch a terminal window either via the gui button on your panel that is already there ( OR if you removed it like I always do because I know the hotkey combo by heart....or must launch it another way. hold ctrl and alt and press t )

3. hold ctrl and shift and press v to paste it OR right click inside the terminal window, and select " paste" using your mouse. Press enter. Now left click and highlight all of the results ( you can exclude the original inxi command itself..no prob either way), and copy them.
4. Come back here, press that </> button ( just above this white message window...fifth from the left. Press spacebar once or twice ( to make it easier to aim between the *quote* *quote* things that appeared. left in between those two quotes, ...now paste . pasting those results within that " button" makes it easier for everyone to read it in a more organize fashion. ;)

I realize for a beginner all of that may seem like a lot of advanced work, but practicing doing that is a good thing. The results of that command save much time on speculation for everyone and often helps anyone narrow down the issue faster.
"files" program
That's called Nemo in Linux Mint Cinnamon :D

3rd. Please post one more command's results

lsblk

Post those results just like you did with the inxi command

As this has not been an issue previously with the same version of LM, I was thinking, worst case scenario, of re-formatter the 2TB drive using G Parted to see it the OS then pick it up.

Any help to avoid this would be appreciated.
