[SOLVED] Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon Complete System Freezing

Post by osteme »

Hello, a few months ago I bought a new SSD (WD Blue 500GB SATA). A few weeks after, I started experiencing complete system freezing. Cursor does not move, clock does not update, I can't switch tty and can't connect with ssh. I can only reboot with SysRq. Freezing looks instantaneous, I didn't notice any slowing down before it happens. I checked previous logs with

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -1
and there is nothing special. In fact, it does not seem like there are any logs written after the system freezes, because SysRq commands leave logs and there are no such logs if I issue SysRq commands while the system is frozen.

I found a few questions about similar problems. The solutions are to set kernel property

Code: Select all

nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=4000
But, if I'm not mistaken, this is only for NVMe SSD and would not work for SATA SSD.

The problem might not actually be related to SSD, since I used Linux Mint 19.3 on HDD before installing Linux Mint 20.2 on SSD. But given that the logs are not saved and there are similar problems with other SSDs, I think that the problem is most likely with SSD.

Code: Select all

Welcome to the forum, osteme.

Does you system usually run this warm? I wonder if something might be expanding as it gets hot and that causes an issue?

Yes, I usually have high CPU and GPU temp. I clean laptop it and change thermal paste every year. It decreases temperature but by only about 5C.

For reference, I just checked, SSD temperature is 37C, while CPU is 77C.

We'll have to see if someone else has ideas about this. Nothing is coming to mind for me right now.

I had very similar system freezing couple of years ago. It started happening after installation of Open Suse linux. Later I found out that my RAM is bad. Please try to test memory first. You can use memtest86 for this purpose.

I can't. If I install memtest using apt, it does not show up in the grub menu. And it only shows on installation USB if I boot it as non-UEFI. When it starts, if I don't press anything it hangs (nothing changes and no response to input) at
Pass 0%
Test 74%
Test #2
Time 0:00:01
Pass 0
Errors 0

If I press F2 (multithreading), it hangs at
Pass 0%
Test 18%
Test #1
Time 0:00:18
Pass 0
Errors 0

I run both multiple times and the results are the same.

Here is a discussion on how to get memtest in GRUB No Memtest in Grub.. I do not know if that would help to get the test to complete.

Thanks. The tests ran without problems. I only did one pass because it took 25min, but there was no errors.

The problem is not solved yet. Sometimes it does not appear for several days. But, in the last 12 hours, it happened twice. I'm not sure but I think those freezes happen usually when there is a continuous writing to ssd, for example - downloading.

Have you checked to see if you have the latest firmware for the SSD?

I guess the easiest way is to use WD Dashboard but it is only for Windows. By running hdparm I get

Code: Select all

FwRev=415020WD
but I could not find anywhere what is the current version.

I managed to boot Windows that I have in dual-boot but didn't use for a couple of years. WD dashboard does not even install. Progress bar gets to about 20% in the first 1-2 seconds but then hangs. I waited for several minutes - no change.

Running out of RAM and no swap file/partition? I've managed to do that.

An i5-3230M running at those temps is high. Before I modded my thinkpad T430, the i5-3320M was idling at around 40C and rarely going above 70C. Now I have an i7-3632QM in it and that runs about 10C hotter. Could just be poor thermal design.

I have experience with a few software bugs that resulted in out-of-memory. Computer starts gradually to slow down until it stops responding. I think it takes a few seconds for this to happen and it is noticeable. What I experience is different. It freezes momentarily. It works fine and in the next moment - it stops responding, even clock does not update.

I thought I would add some thoughts to this thread as I have been searching for some answers for a while

I have a ryzen 5600 , 32gig ram , 1 TB and GT1030

I originally had the 1TB hard drive in a laptop that I used as my daily driver and running Mint 19 for over a year with no issues , then as I bought a new laptop I thought I would move the HD to a desktop to continue using and have files available to me that I wanted to transfer to my new laptop.

booting into the linux mint 19 XFCE desktop was fine until a few minutes in when it just froze - no keyboard or mouse and only way to shut down was 6 seconds on the power button

I thought that it was some sort of config issue going from the laptop to desktop so I decided to do a new install of mint 20 MATE alongside - this was fine , until I used driver manager to install the nvidia driver for the video card and then this install did the same thing as the mint 19 install.

so I booted to compatibility mode , root and did the apt get remove nvidia* and then rebooted to an install that did not freeze

I then booted to compatibility mode for 19 XFCE and also removed the nvidia drivers and this seemed to work fine , except that having firefox and chromuim open with a lot of tabs seemed to make scrolling slightly jerky.

I then just booted and only opened firefox thinking it may have been a ram issue - though with 32gigs , I am not sure why

after an hour or so of just firefox , the freeze has occurred again

next step is to adjust the swappiness and see what that does - https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/linux-swappiness/

and continue to search for answers on t'nternet

Your hardware is SIGNIFICANTLY newer than the OP of this topic. You really should create a new topic for your issue.

A 5000 series Ryzen needs to be using a kernel newer than 5.4 to work properly. We recommend using the 5.13 which is available in Update Manager. Many others with these newer Ryzens have run into issues trying to use the older kernels/drivers. If your CPU also has integrated graphics then the drivers are not even in the 5.4 (which came out long before your CPU did).

Also make sure your BIOS/UEFI is upgraded to what is needed for the 5000 series Ryzens.

Please create a new topic if upgrading the kernel does not clear the issues you are experiencing.

apologies

that should have read AMD Ryzen 5 3500X

kernel is 5.4.0-91

I have changed the swappiness to 10 , but do not think that will help

Psensor shows good temps and CPU RAM ok

when it freezes again I intend to try this https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... .html#ID27

That CPU should also have a newer kernel than 5.4.

It is also not a 3rd-gen Intel like the OP of this topic. Hardware can be a factor in freeze issues, so per forum rules, please create your own topic.

I checked WD Dashboard, the firmware is up-to date.

I tried to generate crash data with kdump and save it to another drive. I changed the directory in the /etc/default/kdump-tools but crash data was not written (just files kdump_lock and kexec_cmd were created after reboot). In fact, if I try to perform system crash with alt-sysrq alt-c, I no longer can reboot with alt-sysrq alt-b.

I also tried to configure kdump to use ssh, but it didn't work, which could be expected since when the system is frozen like this, I can't connect to it with ssh. I don't know if it is important but I only tried this when laptop is connected to wifi, I didn't try Ethernet.

I'm completely out of ideas.

When did your kernel start crashing? kdump is to get information from kernel crashes. You have not described anything which would indicate the kernel is crashing. Nor have you described anything to indicate the system is crashing.

A freeze is not the same thing as a crash.

A number of people with Nvidia graphics have run into issues where their system goes to sleep and never resumes from sleep. If this might be what is happening in your case, I suggest you take a look at the fix described in this post. Many others using the Nvidia 470.86 driver have found success with that fix.
